Probably some daft idiot just fuelled up their 4x4 (the ones that have road tyres on and would struggle to drive off a grass verge) and as they where busy talking on the phone forgot to release the trigger when they returned the nozzle to the pump and sprayed the whole lot in diesel.

As all pumps seem to serve diesel these days it seems you cant help but stand in the bloody stuff everytime to fill up these days.

The smell of diesel might well be from your shoes ???  If some numpty has spilt some and not cleaned up ???  Diesel smell is strong and lingers, so if you've got it on your shoes/trousers it'll smell for a while ??
On my hands. I assume one of the locals has managed to spray diesel over the petrol pump handles...

It could have been diesel in the garage tanks,I have known it to happen.I was on my way back from Gt. Bentley bike meet with a mate on a TRX850 a few years back,we stopped to fill the bikes up with petrol, but within a couple of miles his bike started running extremely rough and then conked out. When we smelled his tank it stunk of diesel and when he drained it the next day sure enough he had a tank full of diesel.
