Aren't we all losing a bit of perspective here?

As I've read it, it's not as if the car has been found to be a ringer or something.

State of the tyres and bonnet catch should have been found during inspection and negotiation before purchase. It's unfortunate that Di didn't pick them up but we've all missed the obvious when buying a car - once, at least.

That leaves a thermostat and a cam belt history not necessarily trusted. Thermostat failure is not unknown on this engine and I (in common with many on this forum, I suspect) wouldn't trust cam belt history on a V6 anyway. I'd get it done for peace of mind. I'm sure many are sold without a genuine cam belt history or where the full kit hasn't been replaced, etc.

On the whole, I don't believe I'd be too unhappy if I'd bought this car - unless I've missed something?  :-/

You'll get more of these .......

True, but increasing the post count is the only way to get established members selling cars, which is less likely to generate issues. So far only had 1 member with big post count cause problems, i think higher post count limit would reduce number of issues / moderating

What difference will that make.

As H21 says, sell the cars in the sales section, talk about them in the gen chat.  1000 posts wont stop it degrading into a free for all.

The latest ad in question seems to have been done openly and honestly, apart from a list of bad things about the car.

I have said this before and will say it again.

A set structure needs to be implementd for the seller toabide by.

Age/model/colour/miles/owners etc etc.

Pics, inside/outside/engine bay and boot.

Service history/MOT/TAX.

List of recent work or upgrades and a list of badpoints.

When posted, genuine questions only.

If the forum then want to chat about it goodor bad, then take it general chat and link it to the sales thread.

There is room to pull both buyer and seller in the case of the of the sale of the car.AsH21 says, Buyer Beware and sadly Diane has a lot on her plate and not done a lot of things in maybe the way most of us might of.  Allthough it does seem seehas bought basicaly a cracking good car that has a few niggles with it.  With a littletime and a few quid invested i reckon there is a good car there for the next few years.

It seems also that the good oldGenuine OOF spirit is there and it is just a matter od time before all is made good.

Appologies for any bad speeling or spacing, yet annother keyboard (only opened yesterday) that has got tight keys.  >:(

that saranbailey if i remember had 98 posts,it would be easy to join the forum quickly build a post count up and then shift a few motors be it one or two with a few faults and then bugger off so aye increasing post counts to be able to sell could work but then be it a forum for omegas youve got the vast knowledge of the members to try and pull the wool over so it is down to the buyer at the end of the day to check what your buying before exchanging any pennies...if someones got a car for sale and someone comes kicks the tyres and hands the cash over theyre gonna take it but it does sound like he took advantage of a woman in the wind and rain to rush the sale in a services car park..but as said its to the buyer to check the car before buying

Lets take a wee reality check.....

If you are looking for a particularly tasty car (like a late model, 3.2 Elite with all the toys) and find one on Autotrader.

Do you:-
a) thrust the asking price in cold hard smelly 50's into the sellers hand, pleading for them to release the car or, shudder, do they need more dosh?
b) Ask a vague question or three before parting with the asking price?
c) Scan the market and the freely available info on the net, ask a few pertinant questions and then negotiate around what you consider a fair price, meeting the seller half way?
d) Heard the info before, chose to set it aside in the rush to buy what appears to be a nice example, then, in the cold light of the following morning, ask the world if I done well?
e) Buy in haste and then ask for advice and be totally shocked when the answers do not support what I thought/hoped they might, despite advice on how to get the problem sorted with minimal cash outlay??

To be truthfull, I'm now leaving this discussion as I, as an admin, am now too wrought up in it and could be seen to be being biased and condescending...

I personally think the lass should keep the car - she's had a very generous offer to have the cambelt kit fitted as a favour, by a well known forum member.
Thermostat and bonnet cable aren't really that challenging for someone of his ability, so I think the lady could well 'get off lightly' there!
Once these issues are sorted, she'l have a cracking Omega. :y

Thing is, as said, we've probably all bought a car and found summat wrong that we didn't know about. My MV6 wasn't as perfect as I thought, but luckily, nothing serious and I just took it on the chin - I still speak to the seller on Facebook, so it wasn't so bad!!!

If you don't know your cars when buying, ask someone who does and get them to go with you when seeing a potential purchase. ;)

I certainly don't think Di has bought a lemon... When I buy a car (any car) I expect to service it and stick a Cam Belt Kit/Water pump and Axillary belt on, without even viewing the car, no matter what the blurb says. If there is solid proof that I don't need to do any of those it's a bonus :y :y

Tyres are a consumable and also a very personal part... I'm happy enough with the High-end Budget Tyres I use but someone like MDTM/TB may find the limits more restricting than I do (being a respectable member of the community who never speeds ::) :-X) and want to change them... I have 4 reasonably new tyres fitted at present and would expect that to be reflected in the asking price.

Wheel alignment is something which, due to the dreadful condition of our roads (particularly at this time), needs doing Annually really... I know mine would benefit from the "Bones' Magic", although not desperately :y

Thermostats, HBVs, wishbones, idlers and any other number of parts fail... ...$h1t happens! Live with it! Mine was an Ebay swap... It looked (on the surface) like I'd had the better deal by a long way until I started digging into it and realise I was staring down the barrel of a £400+ parts bill and a fair bit of work :o :o As it happens, I'm perfectly happy and only want to change it because I want a newer one (and an Estate)

In short... It wasn't purely down to the seller. Di has rushed into a purchase because of the other things happening in her life, which none of us know about in detail, and should have known better after her time on here. She's not used to buying cars and probably (in hindsight) wishes she'd taken someone from here along to have a look. But, that is no reason to "get rid" of what looks to be a car in very good condition... Judging from what I've read and interpreted from here, I would probably have ended up offering just under £2k for the car (and had seriously considered going and having a look) and spent out on the repairs.

At the end of the day... It looks like a really nice car and, with a little bit of money (even less at James' Labour rate ::) ::)) it will be an example to be proud of :y :y
