So easy to get a Foundation Amateur Licence now - with world wide communication and much more. 10-12 hour course often done in one weekend, not too expensive, no maths - if you can write and have tuppence worth of common sense you will pass.   [smiley=grin.gif]

Courses are run by local clubs - look here: http://www.rsgb.org/arls/foundation_licence.php

and here to find your local club:

Happy radioing!

Memories, memories!!

my "good buddy" at the time, Captain fantastic and me used to transmit our radio station "Radio Snowtown" every sunday night from a different place every time, and at one time, with 500watts we were taking requests from Germany and Belgium!! (we used to take requests on a different channel, and had a repertoire of over 300 tracks on cassette tapes)

We eventually got caught parked up on top of a large hill, and all the team had to run for it, but it was great fun. The aerial of choice was a "starduster" and we transmitted from a transit van with a scaffold pole fitted to the towbar mount at approx 20 mtres up, and three car batteries for power.

there were literally THOUSANDS of cb'ers at that time, and the italians used to whistle in their burners calling "CQ angleterre, cambio, cambio....." all the time, and we used to exchange CQ cards to confirm long distance contacts to prove our equipment could do it.  Sad maybe now, but it kept me off the streets and out of trouble back then.

Oh, and forgot to mention, most of us went on to do our HF licences with the RSGB, and 2 metre licences too, getting aG6 or G8 prefix followed by 3 letters, eg G6 CFD etc.

I used to have a couple of YAESU sets, and an ICON 2m one.

Still use mine, useful if there are a couple of you, or for advance warnings of traffic holdups/accidents and for advice on alternative routes to avoid them.

Aerials are a little more discrete now, the old long DV27 was a big giveaway to the "buzbies" or home Office!

Anybody ever get done or had your equipment siezed? I used to do a "radio station" playing music on the old AM days on an obscure channel with requests, and had a 9ft base fed diapole on a towbar mount!  got frightened a few times........
I've not been stopped on many occasions in my time (nearly 40 years) but one of the few was because I had installed an aerial for the radio-cassette that looked as if it had a base loading coil.  When I explained it was for FM radio, WPC asked if I had a microphone to which I replied "No.  It doesn't record" which made her do a double-take.

Those were the days when they could give time to almost any transgression you cared to commit.

I think the Home Office knew it would die out if they legalised it.  Pretty much correct.

Y' know....the only thing I struggled with doing the HF licence was the bloody morse code, 12 wpm was only just attainable for me back then, and I considered it totally useless, but, dah dit, dah dit, dah, dah, dit, dah (CQ,CQ,CQ DX) still sticks in my mind to this day!!

silly, I know, but I'm 50 this year, and some things just refuse to go in your memory..............

(oh, and I've still got my "Ham Master" base mic, my K40 mic, and my Superstar 2000 set somewhere!!)

Yep, well sort of. I remember the occasion and busby was in a yellow Renault 5 on Stockton High Street, had a load of radio equipment is the passenger side, we guessed and went to look. I was in a Landrover with the company logo all over it, and we had pye radio's fitted... :D :D :D
I remember driving into the depot one day and being greeted by a colleague to say get rid of the rig, busby was in the office with the boss, I did, and my boss talked them round so no real action but not allowed to use in company vehicles after that... :D

For those who are on the air (or in the area) I will be involved in a little special event station this weekend at Elstead mill.

If you hear GB2EM on the air (HF bands - it's a desperately bad VHF/UHF site  ;D) Give us a call. If you fancy a pint, pop in.

I would imagine that's where we'll spend most of our time. 80m SSB will probably be favourite unless something interesting comes along elsewhere.

The DTI used to pay many visits when I worked at Rainbow Communications in Tooting (Figges Marsh to be precise), but they never got to take any of the transmitters we built because they were never in use at the time.

My own rig back then was a President AM/FM/SSB used in conjunction with a Bremi BRL500 (500W RF Power Amp) and a Sigma 4 antenna.

Those were the days  :-/
