Sony have got it very wrong this time....

The PS3 is just far too expensive and, to the general public, is no better than the XBox 360.
Especially when XBox is half the price, has a very established games catalogue and has very succesful (though far from perfect) online gaming.

No, I suspect this will go on to cost Sony a LOT of money.

But still half the price of a Samsung or Panasonic BluRay player - it is not just a games console - it is also a hidef disc player

PS3 and BRD HAS to work. Sony has bet the company on it.

I do wonder if the PS3 will be as good as a standalone player?

I have both the PS2 and XBox, I like them both equally and use one for playing some certain types of games and the other for other types of games and likewise will do with the XBox 360 and PS3 but, Im not able to afford either yet so im waiting till they both are within my price range (or until its either get an PS3 or Irmscher front bumper? lol)

Martin. The problem for Sony is that the PS3 is perceived (and marketed) as a games console first and foremost.

Yes it is a good Blu Ray DVD player, but there is little demand for that right now. The shelves are not exactly overflowing with Blu Ray DVDs.
HD is the way forward, but it is still in its early stages and the formats need to be ratified befor there will be strong consumer demand.

As I said, they have made a big mistake with this....

From what i understand the PS3 runs on LINUX, and is actually more a media centre than just a games console.

You can/ will be able to 'download' and upgrade and it will become more 'PC' orientated.

More of the larger film companies are backing blue ray, so i doubt if Sony have made a balls up.

Its definately more serious than the Mini Disc/ DAT war that never happened a few years ago, but mini disc did win that one, although not necessarily to the general public, a number of radio stations do use MD, and you can still buy MD but i haven't seen DAT for atleast 5 years.

Aparently LG are bringing out a Blue Ray and HD DVD combined player later in the year, i would guess that will sell very well!!

Not when it costs more than the top end BD players, and it would be cheaper to buy a PS3 and a HD-DVD player.

Remember that the PS3 is one of the best BD players on sale in the UK

and at the last minite Sony removed a chip that makes it compatiable with many older games.
Thats because it didn't work, and added about £100 to build costs.

Also games are 'locked' to each console, so can't lend games to friends.... if Microsoft pull their fingers out and release a WiFi enabled xbox, they could easily take the market share....
MS do a Wireless adapter, so not a reason to release new console...

Just use a wifi network adapter and you can make anything with an internal nic into a wifi enabled device, the apprentice has one for his xbox, (currently borrowed to run a media centre in the bedroom lol) xbox thinks its connected via ethernet the wifi box does the rest.

Aye, wireless bridges are sound. Use loads myself for different reasons.  Set up one capable of 16km for my brother's business a few years back...

I used to be a bit of a console nut myself. Having owned a megadrive, saturn, dreamcast, ps2 and xbox previously. I have to say I still prefer the PC over all of them for gaming. It wins for graphics, control options, longivity, internet and general day to day tasks. Closest runner up was the dreamcast. One of my favourite consoles. Such a shame they stopped production and making games for it :(

With my PC, I can either get my steering wheel ready for my racing sims (Live For Speed my game of choice), use the keyboard and mouse for my first person gaming, or use the joystick for my space/flight sims. The only problem is games can sometimes take a while to be ported on to the PC. It holds its own in the First Person genre though, and graphics wise, you will always see better on the PC. Also, if you dont have to splash out hundreds of quid a time when something new comes out because you dont have the right hardware. Small upgrades are usually easy to fit.
