My opinion, no, if they "had" done it all those years ago then why has it not been done since, knowing how the USA like to be the leaders in all and everything i would have honestly have thought they would have had a small town built there by now if it were as easy as it seemed all those years ago and with the massive leap in technology they have to hand today!!

I'll go with a fourth option - Possibly faked.

The cold war was still happening, there was a very real threat that the USA was going to go to war, then there was Fidel Castro (not sure of spelling) who was drumming up quite a bit of support against the USA.

America needed something positive to believe in again.  And how to get all of America to be as one and believe in "the USA".
Such an undertaking required a few things coming together, such as a President who was well liked & charming and who was able to sell the idea of a science fiction to science fact undertaking!.

At the time it worked and did what it was designed to do, bring America together & say to the world we can and we have.

It's only now that the 'it was con' has gathered ground now we have technology to question the historical evidence.

Mind you I think in this day & age, we should be spending money getting this planet sorted out, let alone spending billions just to say let's have a go trying to get to Mars (not the choc) and let alone be let loose on another planet !!  ::)

PS. The Apolo Rocket had less computing power than a Sinclair Spectrum computer, think it was less than 3-4meg of computing power and was only to help with the early warning systems, not the main running of the Rockets systems.  That was still down to the x3 Astronaughts and their slide rulers and pens.

Mainly because of the costs of going there and the limited return of anything worthwhile once the Apollo Mission had finished.

The USA had achieved its propaganda victory over the USSR, and it was more important to secure the Earth's atmosphere for US hardware in the form of space satellites and their military technology.  One day a base on the Moon may be worth the colossal cost, but it will involve an International effort.  No one country can now really afford the multi-trillion outlay. ;) ;)

Probably if they find oil on the Moon or Mars, then there'll be one massive effort worldwide to get an oil platform there by someone ~ Because as we all know, once oil supplies have been found, secured and defended in war / other means, everything will be alright and we can (owners of oil platforms) all sleep at night then !!!!.
Not that I'm being sarcastic of how it'll turn out you understand  ::)  ;D  ;D  :y

I must admit to believing that man could, then, have landed on the moon, but, taking off again is the bit that I have some difficulty with... :-/ :-/ :-/

if that was the case, then why would the Russians keep quiet - they'd see from their own data and telemetry whether the US faked it or not?  :o

It has come to my attention that there is debate over whether or not man has landed on the moon. I'm just curious as to how many people think we never went and it was all somehow a big "conspiracy".

Putting aside the fact that you can fire a laser at a prism placed on the moon by astronauts and it returns, thereby proving we've been (as demonstrated in the hilarious and factual "Big Bang Theory" sitcom) How on earth does anyone think the thousands of people involved have kept quiet for so long?

Just curious as to what the level of skepticism is  :y

terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired..........this has been debated time and time again over the last 42 years! It seems like whenever some monumental event takes place, the "conspiracy theory" brigade come creeping out of the woodwork to try and disprove the event ever happened. Some people watch (and believe in) too many films! ::)

It's remarkable what could be achieved with a modest machine when software developers were careful with its' resources. ;)

.. and how they got it right first time when their software had to be woven into core memory. ;D

I'm more interested in how many people believe it to be faked - and its an astonishing 18%  :o :o
