youre probably right mate.... but if youre getting on a bit wud u prefer a car that cocoons you in luxury or a car u have to be squuezed into.

I missed a vital part of the specification there.  ;)

Hmm. Perhaps something with a less reclined driving position. A Cayenne instead? They must be useful for something other than blocking roads on the school run. ;D

I think any version of the 911 is highly desirable, save for the ridiculous late 80's turbos - I think they look laughable.

I didnt understand the swoonery that goes on in most car circles concerning 911's, until, by chance and within 6 months of each other, I had the opportunity to drive (properly drive, not just sit in it and steer it along a bit) a Cayman, then a 996. The Cayman is a totally brilliant 'budget' 911, which I immediately felt at home in, and felt I could hustle it along way beyond my personal bravery limit. The 996 was just awesome - brilliantly engineered, ergonomically excellent, fabulously tractable, and again, I felt immediately at home.

I want one! Boy, do I want one!!

(Er, am I having a mid-life crisis too?? :-X

thing is the stuff we hear on top gear re handling is generally pointless. they have their own track and i will prob only go on a track once if not no times at all.

so in the real world we want straight line speed.

the jag  i suggested is still a 0-60 in 4.5 seconds which is rapid enough.

imho :)

With you on the desirability of the Jag, Webby - I intend to buy an earlier model XJR late in 2012  8-) I have some reasonably serious dosh coming to me then, and they're just so bloody tempting, aren't they? £12K buys a mint '98 / '99 / '00 with full Jag s/h and low miles....£12K gets you the very best, and £6K / £7K buys something presentable and usable on an earlier plate. Fabulous car, seriously desirable, very reliable if well-bought - in terms of bangs for buck, unbeatable IMO...

No meaningful comparison can be made with a 911 tho - different cars for different markets.

I've no idea about Porkers, never driven one of any configuration. Obviously by thier nature they may be expensive at times but you'd expect that. If you want one & can afford it the get one mate. I can only advise you to pay more for one with full history & a reasonable mileage. If you like & keep it it'll serve you better & if you decide it's not for you after all you should get your money back. Guy. 8-) :y

While we're at it how do you all pronounce Porsche?
   "Porsh"?
  or
   "Porsher"?    I say "Porsh". ::)

But thats the beauty of the later-variant 911's, Webby - they ARE real-world! No other car has been engineered to deliver what it can - a docile town car with enough luggage space for a (smallish) weekly shop or a reasonable size suitcase, long service intervals, real-world pricing on most parts, unfrightening fuel consumption even when being given the beans (and the toast too  ;D), and - it's a genuine, unarguable supercar that delivers performance and road or track mastery that is almost unsurpassed.....

Even if you dont want one, dont like them, hate the drivers of them, you (I think) have to admire the concept, and the realisation of that concept - it truly is engineering genius (and as someone else mentons earlier, that flat 6 sounds incredible when being rowed along hard.. :y)

Del,
think hard mate, cos if you buy a porsche yes very nice( I have the use of a 911 targa here from the year 78 approx, nice to drive its a nice handling car etc etc

 BUT!!!is it you?
no matter where you leave it some dork will have a jealousy fit and vandalise it, i actually thought you lived in the smoke but see you in ashford, dont know what the area you live in is like but there are bound to be some idiots around ;D and porsche paint is horrendous not to mention spare parts and insurance, you would be better off going and hiring one from the specialists
for a long weekend, then you will know if you really want one or not? you might just save yourself a few grand and a few headaches!! must admit i was really looking forward to driving the 911 but somehow it was a disappointment? i owned a Martini 924turbo years ago and that drives better than the 911 in my opinion!
jm2pw mate :y

If you want one & can afford it the get one mate.

I'm from the above school.  I have never understood the thought that if someones of a particular age wants a certain something, and is treating themselves to it, why does it have to be a "mid life crisis"

For me it will be the the XJ6 or BMW 635.
