Deffo get a proper car kit unless you regularly switch cars. I have a Parrot CK3100 Evo in the Omega and a Nokia CK-7W in the BMW (both bluetooth). They both work great, the Parrot goes through the front speakers in the car whereas the Nokia has its own dedicated speaker.

Although I expected the Parrot to be better due to going through the car's speakers, I actually find the Nokia kit to be slightly better in terms of sound quality. It works fine with every phone I've tried, including Ericsson and Motorola, as well as Nokia. Another advantage of the Nokia kit is that it shows up on the phone as a "hands free" kit, rather than a "headset" which the Parrot does. No big deal, but you can have separate profiles for each on Nokias, and I want mine to be on silent (vibrate only) in all profiles except in the car. With the Parrot you can only achieve this by changing headset profile which means it also affects the profile when you have a music headset connected.

Personally if I were buying another I'd go for the Nokia CK-7W. It'd be much easier to fit in the Omega too, as the Parrot's interface to the front speakers requires bulky connectors to be plugged into the radio's speaker outputs, and it's bloody tight for space in there as it is. I had a right nightmare getting my head unit back in after installing all the gubbins; ended up having to cut some of the connectors out and solder the wires straight on instead.

Got a nokia 6310, I tried the bluetooth, could not get on with it. Had the car hard wired with the in car kit, sound through the speakers, radio goes to mute when the phone rings. Spot on.
No drilling was required into the dash etc, the phone holder is fitted into the rear of the radio and out through the dash.
Cost £200, well worth it, only thing is i cannot use anything other than the 6310, dont matter as the phones are not bad.

Not directly related but I got my new phone today - Nokia 6300 - nice and slick... and comes with a 2megapixle 1600x1200 camera, so no more grainy 640x480 piccies in the maintenance guides!  ;D

With the CK-7W it's got both a cable (pop-port) and bluetooth connection, so you can use either as long as there's a suitable cradle available (or you can plug the pop-port connector straight in, but that's a PITA). If you connect a phone to the cable it overrides the bluetooth. I used to use the cable occasionally when I had a 7250i as a second phone.

Nowadays I never bother plugging the phone in unless it needs charged, just leave it in my pocket and it connects with the ignition, mutes the radio when in use etc. My current phone is an E65 which is an excellent bit of kit IMO... and one of the nice features is you can get it to speak the name of the caller before ringing when it's connected to the car kit, so you know who's calling even if it's in your pocket. It's just a basic speech synthesiser so it's not a great pronunciation but means you don't need to bother recording the voice tags for each contact.

Thats the one I had, great phone, but getting on a bit now. The reasonI changed was money (of course) got the 500 minute, £15 deal from 3. I would swap the sim back and forth but have been advised that older phones dont like the 3G sims :-/

I prefer not to use it, as its a good excuse for not answering the phone while your driving e.g., (the wife/work), use it mainly if i go on a long drive.

Now that you mention it, I think there's a little bit of 'I should have one because every one else has' in my thinking.
Maybe I'll just get by without it ::)
