apologies....Fiesta
« on: 01 September 2009, 20:59:23 »

The missus Fiesta has a problem with it's power steering it's started going really heavy but it's showing no signs of a leak at all. 2004 1.25 engine that's only done 30,000 miles FFS.

Anyone ever come across this or know how to test if it's the rack or the pump?

Again very sorry but credit crunch dictates 'I repair this one myself, not sure my credibility will stand joining the Fiesta owners club either! ;D

The eldest had the same problem on their 05 festa, I think she said I was a common problem. I will ask her tomorrow what it was.

If you are not loosing fluid, the only other thing that can go wrong (apart from the pump itself of course) is that the drive belt is slipping.

Cheers,  belt seems ok. But will prob change it any way as is the cheapest possibility.

I always wondered why Ford went through a stage of naming their cars after porno mags.  ::)

I wonder what was in their marketing manager's bottom drawer? :D

FWIW it sounds like the pump to me. Does it lighten at higher engine revs and get heavy at idle? Does it go heavy when turning both directions and at all positions from lock to lock?

Power steering pump failure is not un-common.

Also check the uni joints at the base of the steering column, I have seen a  few sieze up (on Fiestas from circa 1990 to the present day!

A squirt of a good penentrating fluid (not WD40 shite) is worth a blast on them.
