Project Gamble
« on: 29 October 2009, 20:54:35 »

Well here is the story so far:

I won an R reg Omega off the internet which had no photos and apparently a blown HG.  I asked why he thought so and all the replies pointed to Oil Cooler.  I went up and pulled it back from Bristol to Farnborough on a rigid bar with the help of a friend.  Turns out there is a small dent on the NS bumper and wing that needs repairing and that it has been SORN'd since Feb.  Otherwise she is mint!  Electric seats, radio, blind all work perfectly, battery a bit wobbly but has nice 17" alloys too.

After feeling a bit under the weather this week this is the first opportunity to work on it so after work I got underway:

Here is whats left of the oil and coolant under the air filter/expansion tank

The expansion tank:

Looks like a really careful mechanic has been at this  :o :

Filler cap, could be normal:

But this is a good sign:

Taking the plenum off, I found a lot of oil residue in the oil and in the intake manifold:

Here is what I mean:

Yet further down in to the V the plot thickens.  The heads are clear, very strange.....  :-/ Also it would seem that someone decided to use thread lock when putting it all back together once in the past :o  Nearly broke my wrist taking these bolts off:

Well the newish sealant would point to the oil cooler plate at least has been replaced at some point in the past, but not recently by the looks of things:

So tomorrow the truth will out when I get the oil cooler out of there.  If it's just that I have paid £165 plus oil cooler parts for a really nice miggy :y  (fingers crossed)

Oh and I just noticed that the keyfob is 2 button.... and that the boot doesnt unlock with the rest of the car.  Me thinks the 3-button key fob has been lost and replaced with a 2......Oh Kevin!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Cheers,

I am not that worried if it is a heads-off project, it'll be a good step up from head refurbs on 4 pots.  If not though it means I'll be behind the wheel of it quicker :y

IIRC the key slot on the boot release has to be in a certain position (vertical/horizontal) in order that the fob unlocks the boot.

Right oil cooler is out and yuk!  What a mess.  Defo the oil cooler now, it was sitting in brown mayo when I took it out.

So just waiting on parts and some traffic film remover from Machine Mart and she'll be back on the road in no time :y
