Has anyone had any experience of these cars? Need something to get me through the winter in the country lanes/tracks. Syd is fine for the town life but need a back just in case we get a bad winter. I have seen the Pajero about and a few guys on our local shoot have them, so looks just what I need. Any comments on faults etc :-?

Had a SWB a few years back, no real problems with it, should have got the LWB though as despite the size of it i found it quite small inside, apart from that they have all the toys you need and i found it very good off road, would go pretty much anywere, used to play on Sailsbury plain on the army ranges. Mine was the 2.5 TD did about 25 mpg. Word of caution if you need to change the alternator they have an oil pump on them and it can get messy if you pull the pipe off not knowing what it is

Ok thanks Im looking at a 2.8 on flea bay, lwb so lots of room for the dogs. Ive enjoyed playing in Syds engine and the alternator was a real in that too.

I personally had a 2.8 LWB. Fantastic car. Never let me down.
The 2.8 is cam chain driven as opposed to the 2.5 cam belt.

Get a good one and you won't regret it

2.8 IS THIRSTYY!!
and suffers from pump seal failure often, 2.5 is as said cambelt but its an easy one to do, as long as its had regular oil changes then its longlived as well,clutches can break up if abused,
auto boxes seem to be quite often failed as well, like a car to drive with the added bonus of being able to see over the tops of hedges etc, we often went round the offroad 4x4 courses in hers, swmbo has had a few of these and it took me long time to get her out of them including the mitsi animal which she prefered to the shogun for the dogs, having said that she would have another tomorrow so they cant be all bad, seem to hold their prices tho!!!

Thats why mine sadly went. I towed our caravan from Lincoln to Huntingdon and it drank £85 

But, It was very reliable and a great car. I would have it back tomorrow if I could afford the shares in Shell

Take a look at the Isuzu Bighorn/Trooper (Bighorn is the Japanese version).

Most you find will be auto (not what I'd pick for off roading personally), but the manual ones do appear on the bay from time to time.

The Bighorn's come with various trim levels, but all have Recaro seats (heated), leccy windows/mirrors, climate control, etc.

I'm not too sure if the UK versions (Trooper) had it, but the Jap versions (Bighorn) also had a Lotus version which does handle much better than a standard 4x4 on tarmac.

Unfortunately, finding a manual Lotus version is going to be difficult because people tend to keep them....and if you do find one then it's going to be lots of money.

Bloody hell, just found a manual Lotus version on fleabay........downside is he wants £2K for it on an L (93) plate.

Know of an Isuzu Bighorn (With the Lotus tweaks - probably now worn after 70K Km) for about £1K.

Was alright for pulling the horse box, wouldn't want to use it as an everyday vehicle though.

shoguns/pajeros if it does not have fsh are prone to head gasket failure/ cracked head, i have had a lwb  mk1 2.8td trooper,mk2 swb 3.1td trooper and a mk2 3.2 V6 petrol trooper, both the 3.1 and 3.2 had heated seats,aircon electric mirrors, electric folding mirrors, heated mirrors. both were slightly modded for off roading (3 1/2" suspension lift and 33" tyres) and the mk1 2.8td was standard, never ever had any major faults with any of them apart from general wear and tear, avoid 3.0 dohc t/d though. Any more info drop us a pm as i have had several 4x4 s and love my off roading

I dont do many miles so not too bothered on how thirsty and plan to keep Syd for the long motorway trips I may have to do.Must be dog friendly and after looking in the back of a pajero tonight Im not sure if its big enough? would remove seat 6 and 7 I guess :-? Also want something big to push over the nasty townies in their posh clean cars who fly through our village not wanting to go through any puddles ok rant over needs to go off road and have a bit of fun on my landlords land and not look out of place when out with the lads shooting. Nothing worse than seeing your omega estate being towed out by a tractor
