Fun with my climate control.....or not
« on: 07 December 2009, 21:38:57 »

A bit of an essay but bear with me, I don't get on here much these days!

As some of you may know I’ve been having trouble with my climate control fan, it only seemed to work when it felt like it!

After a trip down to see TheBoy a few weeks ago & running his diagnostics he said it was definitely, well most likely, almost probably, nearly certainly, possibly might be the fan resistor!  :-?
Having changed one of these on my last Omega my first thought was; great I can’t wait to have a go at that, well OK, not quite!  ::)

So I got round to giving it a go on Saturday (well I did get married in the mean time!).
I opened the glovebox & took out the 3 torx screws, good start.
But only 3 normal screws at the front when there should be 4, oh oh.  :o
Took the 3rd out & the glovebox fell onto the floor, no 5th screw on the side, someone’s been here before!  :(

Passenger seat all the way back & me on my back in the footwell, reach up & the resistor falls out, that’s it half done in 15mins!

But not quite, yes someone’s been here before, there are scratch marks everywhere & one of the clips is broken. So I pop the replacement in, turn on the ignition to check…… & did it work…. Did it f***  :(

I take a closer look & the blue wire to the resistor has snapped, oh joy! Can’t see where it’s coming from so twist the resistor to get it back out & the white wire snaps too, so I’m extremely happy now! Blue was most definitely the colour, at least the air was!  :(

The wires look like they might go into a block & from which it looks like the loom heads back towards climate panel. The loom’s wrapped in protective tape so I cut this away to be left with four wires; one brown, one red (obvious these two methinks) a black with a blue stripe & a brown with a white stripe. Hhhmmm, blue & white stripes, I wonder!  :-?

So with the limited room under there I got some extra wire (well what have I got to loose I’m thinking by now) & (sshh) scotch locked the corresponding coloured wires together, turned on the ignition & did it work, did it f***!  :(

It’s now 3 & a half hours since I started & my back & arms ache so much I don’t really care any more! So I (almost) chuck the glovebox back in, tidy up & head home (yes the bacon butties were lovely as ever Jaime!).  ;)
I’d hardly done a few yards & the fan began to work…. & has done ever since on every setting I can give it!

So was it my ‘expertise’, a stroke of luck or is there more heartache to come? :-?
