What Happens if I Drive my Car Without an MOT?
If you do drive a vehicle without a valid MOT it will usually invalidate your insurance, and if you have an accident or are stopped by the police, you will be liable to face prosecution for MOT non-compliance. The only time you may drive a car without a valid MOT is if you are driving to a pre-arranged test appointment or to a garage that will carry out repairs that are required for your vehicle to pass the MOT test.

AFAIK if you refuse the fixed penalty option (if offered) then you will be prosecuted via the Magistrates Court, if found guilty then max fine is £1000

It is possible to be prosecuted for no insurance as well as driving without MOT invalidates most insurance policies ... but I believe it is a rarity .... but don't hold me to that !!

No MOT = F**k all.

Even if they do decide to "report" you, the fine is invariably cheaper than the cost of an MOT if you say the right thing.


Driving anywhere other than to or from a pre-booked MOT (or other official appointment involving the car) while it is under SORN = Kiss goodbye to the car until you pay the back tax and any other penalty levied.

Having no MOT does NOT invalidate insurance, if it did then the law would not allow you to drive to/from a pre-book test.

The MOT itself isn't worth the paper it's written on anyway, it is quite possible for a car to pass an MOT test and still be unroadworthy in law.

However if caught driving around with No MOT not to a pre booked MOT test then insurance companies WILL not pay out anything ther than third party claims!! The statement is pre booked.

Typical fine is £60 for no MOT.

As regards no tax immediate fee of £100 clamp release fee and a surety payment of £160 refunded once car is taxed. Then off to the magistrates for the actual fine which is normally means tested plus back tax.

Oh yes clamp release fee is doubled after 24 hrs

Last year I declared it SORN but never gave a thought to when it ran out. I was expecting a renewal reminder. Last week I received a letter from DVLA with an £80 penalty, plus arrears of £31  (£40 if paid before 31st December) for not renewing SORN. Apparently not receiving a reminder is not an excuse they accept.

Got caught by that too.... I reckon they've stopped sending reminders to earn more money

They say that they "usually" send a reminder 2 weeks before the SORN runs out, but as you say a nice little earner

It's well known that the SORN system is being used for extortion.

A mate of mine recently bought a wreck and is now being pursued for years of road tax and SORN penalties despite being able to prove he has only just bought it, that it was taxed up to the date it had a liaison with a dry stone wall and the precise date of that incident.

Fine of upto £1000 possible, but 99 out of 100 times will be dealt with by way of a £60 fixed penalty fine.

It is an unendorsable offence which means NO Points can be put on your licence fir the offence.

I do agree that the SORN system is designed to reap in more money as are most of the DVLA and police motoring policys

Does this apply to motorbikes ?. I declared my old Matchless SORN about 5 years ago. I haven't heard anything since.

If your bike has never been taxed & on the road since the SORN system came into play then it doesn't need to be Sorn'd.

Thanks Andy. It would be funny to get a bill for the back road tax. The Matchless is an old G2, over 25 years so the bill would be £0.00
