BOYS & TOYS LR FREELANDER
« on: 21 December 2009, 08:17:18 »

Good morning everyone.  Miggy going great, thus no input recently on this site.

However, you will all probably groan now. As treat got Freelander 1.8 on V plate as a toy. Intro to slight off roading.

Hope it's not the deaded Head Gasket, but now won't start.   No mayo/water on dipstick or under oil filler cap.   No oil in expansion tank,

but here's the worrying bit, smell of petrol coming from expansion tank when cap off. Would the inlet manifold gasket have failed allowing coolant and petrol to mix.

In anticipation Thanks to all the knowledge out there.

Thanks Rustymv6

Will give them a try. Hope they won't be insulted by a Freelander driver. Looks as if most of them are proper 4 x 4 drivers   i.e Defenders etc ;D

How old is it? The early shape ones eat HG's for breakfast, unless your bang on with coolant changes, even then your lucky if they last 50k

If it is HG, make sure that you replace with new MLS gasket, replace oil rail, and do the mod to the stat.  These together, according to the company who refurb engines for LR, virtually entirely resolves the issue.

Missed this site - banters good ::)

Had son do compression test. Result as look at engine left to right  9lb psi  5lb psi   8lb psi   8lb psi.

9lb psi cyl  HT lead knackered.
He also tapped the fuel cut off switch.
Put all back together and out of interest turned her over and presto, burst into life but missing on knackered HT lead.  Let it tick over, exhaust seemed fine.  However noted temperature guage on instrument panel hadn't moved. Checked - heater hoses into bulk head- one cold, one hot.  Me thinking air locks????
weather permitting, new HT leads, plugs and coolant refill tomorrow.  Might use melted snow and anti-freeze.   Snow is pure and hasn't been passed, treated like tap water ;D   Will post result.   Thanks for everyones help.  Graham
