Torque wrench calibration
« on: 23 February 2010, 10:22:08 »

My wrench is now about 5 years old and i remember it costing about 30/40 quid.  Not expensive but it did the job.  Now at work our wrenches have to be calibrated annually, what is the advice on your personal wrenches?  I guess recalibration is not cost-effective with something so cheap so should I just get a new one?

A good tool stockest should be able to calibrate it for you.
I've wrenches ranging from 1" drive down to 3/8" & i've never had them calibrated, though i guess i should :-[

Just had a thought, don't you know someone in the motor pool in the forces? They'll do it for you :y

Check yours against a recently-calibrated example?

Ok, I know you are adding some uncertainty when doing this but my opinion is that, for our kind of work, it is more important that a torque wrench is consistent (able to tighten groups of bolts evenly) than of great absolute accuracy.

As stated above REME that are responsible for calibration of all things electrical, mechanical or optical send them to ABRO (sometimes never to be seen again ;D other times about three months later after you needed them to do the job in the first place  >:()
Must also state that even after calibration there is a certain amount of error between two identical torque wrenches as there is a test meter in the workshop or TQ department to test them on.

They dont calibrate them....they simply check they are still in spec.....unless you have been silly with it, it will still be fine.

My torque 'wench' is a 200-1200 Ft/lbs. version.......somewhat too big for most Miggy jobs, but it surprising how many times I`ve had use for it!

Keep hoping Santa will bring me a baby-torquer! ;D

Yes, my Norbar must be at least 25 years old, and I remember to rewind it.  :y

Does it need checking ?.

I recently bought a small one for smaller torques, from Machine mart. The quality is absolutely CRAP compared to the Norbar.

Quality British tools do last a lifetime, I still use several Steadfast screwdrivers that are over 20 years old, and they still do the business.  :y :y :y

I'm beginning to sound like my Granpa  ;D ;D ;D
