Old school timing.
« on: 04 April 2010, 17:31:55 »

Any ideas on an irritating problem please? If set & strobed to TDC the Consul fires up from cold but once running warm does'nt miss as such but is flat & hesitant. If you advance the dizzy a few degrees when warm she runs smooth & sweet but won't start from cold unless you turn the timing back a tad.
How do we find the middle ground? ::)

How is the auto advance/retard controlled on that dissy ?? If it vac controlled it's possible the diaphragm has failed/stiffened with age ?? - or the pipes come off .. had that some years back and took ages to realise !!

With full choke you should get max vac and max retard if memory serves.

As the choke goes in the vac drops and the advance begins, then with throttle open vac drop further to give max advance at WOT .. minimum vac ....

Aren't there centrifugal weights in the Distributor that adjust the dwell angle ? Could be it needs a bit of lubrication? BTW, don't laugh too loud if i'm talking bullsh*t, it's a long time since I even saw a Distributor LOL ;D

Correct! You're right though, you do forget about mechanical dizzys with points, the best thing that happened under the bonnet of any car was to resign them to the bin!  :y

to add to Nige's post, what if you suck on the tube to the diaphragm? Does the base plate move?

As you appear to be able to "power" time it by moving dizzy - it points to baseplate &/or weights not moving as they should.

If it's Vacuum advanced, I assume you timed it with the Vacuum line disconnected and plugged :-? ::)

I haven't - my oldest car had electronic ignition and used a magnetic pickup, 1978

Just remembered something. A while ago the car packed up & the fault turned out to be the condenser which was the first thing we tried at the time but the pattern one we bought, when fitted insulated the nylon bush on the points hence no spark. When we re fitted it properly the car started but by then we'd fitted a 2nd hand dizzy which may have the faults some of you have mentioned.
Gonna refit the old one tomorrow as it worked fine beforehand. Thanks for the "mind nudge"!! Guy. :y

Apparently there's a load of cheapo pattern Chinese 'Lucas' points & condensors knocking about.
