holts emergency puncture repair kit
« on: 15 April 2010, 21:13:51 »

Has anyone done away with their spare tyre, and relied on holts emergency puncture repair kit ?We go camping alot and figured the space for the spare could be better used.My brother in law has a new laguna and i noticed that that it came with no spare , and as the holts stuff only seems to be a tenner or  so it seemed like a good idea.

Hi,

Suppose its good for small punctures but what if you have a blow out? Doesn't seem worth the risk of getting stuck without a spare IMHO

I do keep one in the boot, and have done for a couple of years, but never had to use it. There was a similar product called Finilec a few years back, which I also kept handy. I would always try and change the tyre, but if it was pouring down with rain on a dark windy night on the M50, I would go for the can.
I have used a similar product on a motorcycle before, and it did work well - however (someone may correct me here) I believe that it creates extra work for the tyre shop, as they have to clean the inside of the wheel up to get rid of the stuff when replacing the tyre.
My wife's Scenic has that fancy Renault tyre repair kit too.... she said she would rather change the wheel too!  :y

Same as that with my mates Civic type r. Comes with a tin of goo and and electric compressor. Think he keeps his hairdressing gear where the spare wheel should be. ;D

As yet he's not needed it, but we must trust the powers that be to have tried and tested it.

My MX5 had a tiny boot and a space saver spare which I got rid of. I bought a liquid off Ebay that you put in the tyre and should you get a puncture the liquid should stop the tyre deflating plus I also carried a tin of Holts tyre repair just incase.

The cans of goop can only "fix" minor punctures, and many places will not repair the tyre after the use of "goop".

I know of 2 people who had goop cans (and no AA/RAC cover either) who have had very expensive bills after getting big holes in tyres ... a tow truck home on spectacles is an expensive puncture ....

I have used the holts repair stuff. it is quite good so long as you dont have a split or a big hole in the tyre,
I would still keep the spare in the car though. and use the can as an emergency.
also as stated you have to tell the tyre place you have used it when you get it replaced.
I had problems with a rover I had, because of the wheel balancing wieghts the tyre kept going down on two wheels so I put that stuff in and never had any problems with it again.
