Diesel Omega wanted - cheap and cheerfull preferr
« on: 25 August 2006, 18:15:00 »

As above.  Posted also in the wanted section, but did not want to clog it with the speil as follows.

23 year old daughter bought a first car of a Rover 111 Kensington.  Her choice.  Tidy car but not enough metalwork for my liking.  She has a daily commute of 50+ miles and return along a fast and busy A road to do a post grad Teaching course for the next year.

Was at a fatal crash today on the road she uses daily where a similar car to hers was obliterated by a Merc and narrowly missed becoming a mushroom cloud on a petrol station forecourt.  It spoiled the day of a few people, myself included, and makes me want to get a stronger car for her to use.  She drives sensibly, but not everyone on this road does.....

The question.

Anyone assist with an older Meega TD, spec not important, condition within reason also not important, but with a reliable diesel that will clock up loads of miles over the next year?

I'm not looking for any sympathy vote, just explaining my reasons why.

As always, cheaper is better but a fair price of hundreds, not thousands, anticipated.

thanks

Does it have to be a diesel??

A nice V6 will easily do 35mpg on a good run...

Only saying that as you will have a bigger selection of cheap cars, when not limiting yourself to diesels.

There are loads of cheap 2.5 V6's about... Register with Auto Trader to be able to do customised searches...

and does it have to be running?

Saw a nice looking 2.5 td north england not running.

Current bid i think was oooooh.....£10

will go find the link....at that price - and it may be an easy fix upon further seller enquiries...it may still be profittable to get it delivered.

Ok here we go

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&item=200019647505&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Agreed not a great listing and yes its going to need trailered. But if it goes at the level i think, with your knowledge Bruce to fix, it may be worth watching and/or enquiring about.

Looks okay - and may simply be a sensor or immobilisor issue.

Not that many running in Scotland on ebay just now but will keep an eye out...

to do a post grad Teaching course for the next year.

Can't offer any advice about the cheap diesel, only to say that I would have thought it could be a bit of a tall order.

Would like to wish her every success with the Teaching Course - this is something I would like to do.

Also, glad that she came out of the incident unscathed.

Happy hunting!

The 2.5 or 3 ltr would not cut the economy, to my mind.  I have a 3ltre and its not cost efficient for such extended runs, much as I'd like it to be.  Gas converted would be an option, but would be looking for one already done.  And they still carry a fair price....

My original post was done in a wee 'down' moment. I was the one working at the crash scene, not my daughter.  It was at a spot on the road that she passed but a few minutes previously on her way to Uni.

My 'I am tougher than this' veneer cracked a tad today, despite having seen more dead people of assorted ages in messy circumstances over the years than I would like to remember, just this one hit home harder than most others.

I know the TD is a tall order, but I will find one.  Today, a similar weight of metal to an Omega versus a small puddle jumper head on was a bit of a foregone conclusion, and my daughter is currently driving a puddle jumper.  The puddle jumper and driver got second prize.

Off for a glass of vino and a kip before the blues get me too much.

toot toot the noo.

Reading the ad......he mentions it was refusing to start when warm then eventually died completely.
My merc did this.....became a git to start when warm....then died totally.
It was the fuel pump......so I suspect it maybe the same in this case.....and they aint cheap  :(

He probably knows this as if it was just a sensor or something else cheap to replace.....i would have thought he would have got it running again.

Having read the ad, I am inclined to agree. These pumps are about £1300 reconditioned, HOWEVER I have seen several on Ebay. You would pay about £200 ish for a used one and changing would take about 2 hours in total. You would have to remove the inlet manifold, which is 12 nuts basically. But you would then have great access to the glow plugs, which I would do at the same time.

Bit of a gamble - it could be siezed for all we know! Or the timing chain could have snapped!!!!!

I would steer clear myself and find one that runs. A decent TD saloon will set you back £700+ and an Estate about £1100+

Pity I didn't know sooner. I have sold mine only 2 weeks ago!

If you go to try one, make sure the turbo starts whistling at 1800rpm. And there should be an enormous surge of extra power at about 2k+

deffinately the pump!

changing the pump is not a job i would like.

the electrics go in the pump and is not a cheap fix.

cost £100 for a pump and then £200 to have it fitted.  special tool required iirc for the chain to keep it right - at least this is what my brother was advised by his mate who owns a bmw specialist who did the work on the cheap!
