Run Flat Tyres
« on: 17 May 2010, 20:42:32 »

As title says anybody had experience of these.  Any tips to make em last longer, i've read mixed reviews and i'm not convinced they are as good as the dealer states they are :-/ especially at nearly £200 a corner :o

I have extensive experience with the goodyear emt
tyres the 1st generation were very hard but 2nd generation were very good however the tyre compounds tended to be towards the soft side so great for grip not for mileage also with the tyres being so good at running flat you have to have a pressure monitoring system fitted this adds to the start up price

I have been in a car doing in excess of 150mph (off road of coarse) with a tyre on each corner drilled through the sidewall and no difference noticed

With all this said i personally would stick to a good quality set of tyres with a good spare as back up

and even cars designed to take them have agro, cracked wheels and tramlining issues on bmw's according to Tony at WIM. "Customers with runflats queueing round the corner" he said. "What do you recomend?" says I. "Bin em and fit normal tyres" says he.

Runflats weigh alot, so BMW made thier wheels even lighter to get some of the weight back, but runflats transmit so much stress through the side wall the wheels cant take it and crack causing a puncture, except you dont notice until the tyres breaked as well. Unless you have tyre pressure sensors as an option...then ignore the sensor warning because "the car still drives ok" accordint to my brother in law. ::)

Had a read on wim - mixed views again.  Dealers quoted me £300 for insurance of 4 tyres over 3 years.  Might just spend the extra and get normal running tyres with an emergency spare. :-/
