And a serious one, Mercs are the biggest dissappointment of the last 15 years suffering from huge rust issues, electrical faults and poor build, a shadow of the early 90's.

Also, if an auto, the gearchange should be smooth, any signs of hesitation, lumpyness or similar and its on its way south

The rust does not allways show to the casual observer. Check bottoms of doors under rear seat if at all possible, inner front wings, tailgate, and around rear light clusters on the inside.

My Dad is a dyed in the wool Merc man, (having had loads of them,) and currently driving a C220Cdi, and now admits its his last one, as Merc have gone very downhill in the last 5 years.  The car is 5yrs old and rusting badly, and to top it off, (NOT MAIN MERC DEALER )His last bill for an ALTERNATOR was over £700, and the rear suspension springs were £540. brake pads are £80................ and Merc want £110 per hr labour too...he's looking at an insignia now.

how the mighty are fallen.
