Not happy...
« on: 28 June 2010, 12:16:16 »

The love affair is well and truly over!
This happened at around mid-day on Friday...

Trouble was it happened in the middle of no-where...

...so I ended up walking 10 mile to get to my destination. I then had to borrow a car, drive the 100 miles back to Wolverhampton to pick up my tools and a new auxiliary belt (How can the water pump be classed as an 'auxiliary' component?).
Saturday was spent servicing the diesel 106 I had borrowed and fitting a new aux. belt to it because the damn thing spent most of the drive back squealing and I had visions of it failing like the Omega.
I then drove the 90 miles back to my car and spent ages trying to work out which of the three belts the spares shop provided actually fitted the car. Sussed it in the end and fired up my car and let it heat up gently to check for coolant leaks. I left the borrowed Peugeot at the side of the road and went to collect it's owner in the Omega. It got 5 miles down the road and then the spring for the aux. belt tensioner decided to let go...

To cut a long story short I had to phone a friend from Wolverhampton and they came down that night to pick me up, I was planning on joining a recovery service and then get the car recovered at a later date, but when they got to me it was decided to tow the car back the following morning. We spent the night on the beach having a barbecue and a few drinks/smokes. First light saw us disconnecting the drive shafts from the hubs to save the auto. box and towing the Omega 95 miles back home.

I had already decided to sell the car due to it being un-able to go past a petrol station without needing a drink, it has been advertised on tinternet for quite a while but not one person has got in touch to come and look at it. In comparison my Vectra diesel was advertised at 11 a.m. and sold by 4 p.m. the same day!
I should stick a new tensioner on it (The old one seemed fine, it span with no noises or notchiness so I took a chance) I but have already spent LOADS on this car...
Track rod ends, wishbones and new brakes all round, done less than 1,000 miles, £80's worth of four wheel suspension alignment to protect the new Falken rubber, and if I were to do the tensioner then I'd have to do the timing belt and I can't be arsed/don't have the money... I'd much prefer to take my revenge on the car, for making me walk 10 miles, by cutting it up into little pieces and taking them to the scrap yard...

That's a tale of woe Brik - without doubt, which is a pity as the car looks very well indeed. :(

I wouldn't think that my saying "through adversity comes strength and wisdom" would be of much comfort to you at the moment. ;D :-/ :-/

If the Aux Belt tensioner has packed up, why do you need to change the cam belt?

Pay for the new tensioner and sell it as a runner :y :y

I will miss this car it drives spot on and pulls like a train... it was so smooth over the bumps yet handled surprisingly well for such a big lump of metal. I managed a few trips to Wales in the time I've had it and it was a revelation to be able to just plant your foot and scoot past slow moving traffic on the twisty A roads.
Only bad things about it were non-functioning climate control, no cruise control fitted and the fact it would only do around 18 m.p.g. around town. Also although the sports leather seats are in good condition I'm not a fan of leather upholstery...

The car had a bad oil leak from (I'm pretty sure) the rocker gaskets, this has resulted in contamination of the aux. belt which caused it to snap... Presumably the timing belt will be just as contaminated?
As for the oil leak when I first brought the car nearly 2 months/2,000 miles ago I had to put around 1/4 of a litre in it to bring the oil level upto the max mark. Since then I've pretty much thrashed it around for two months (when it's warmed up enough) but it's not needed any-more oil!

Is it possible that the breathers were blocked and a good thrash cleared them out?

As for selling the car as a runner...

It is quite tidy, only 101,000 miles, two previous owners, obviously well looked after but it has had a new rear quarter welded on at some point in it's history, this is now just starting to rust along some of the upper edges. It seems rot free along the rest of the chassis though. I was going to keep it and sort out the body but it's just too thirsty...

As The Baron says.

Please review the forum guidelines as regards post count numbers.

Would also advise against tagging your car as a breaker onto an existing thread of any other persons...... :-X   :y
