Well 28.3 mpg actually, all urban driving, from full tank with two people in and a sack of spuds, not that that makes much difference!

When i slowed for roundabouts to say 20, i would leave it in 4th, then gently accelerate away,, which it would do easily without labouring the engine (I like smooth relaxed driving).

Makes me think about the auto Elite, as its mpg has worryingly gone down to 17 ish!

You'll attain even better fuel economy if you use the gearbox properly.  Laboring the engine at low speeds in 4th is not a good thing for economy.  Drop her into second, then ease up the box and you should see a further reduction in consumption.

No but the point is I wasn't labouring the engine, as stated. I don't think gently accelerating from 20 in 4th on a flat is labouring the engine,  I know it's not!

You are missing my point, unless of course you have changed the laws of physics.

Perhaps vehicle manufacturers should forget about the first few gears they put in cars?  :-/

im actually embarking on a bit of an economy project myself. ive filled up to the brim and am doing normal everyday runs (as i wud normally) but keeping the revs as close to 1500 (or under if pos). i have auto 2,5. dont really know what else to do to be more economical on my everyday runs??? :-?

I see now, I thought your first post seemed a bit off, then I read your second one.

Perhaps vehicle manufacturers shouldn't forget about the first few gears they put in cars, which can be used for fast starts, loaded driving, going up hills etc etc etc etc. There's nothing wrong with gently accelerating from 20 in 4th, on flat level ground. I'm not labouring the engine, and I am using the gearbox properly, why change down when there is no need to?

Say at 20MPH;

Accelerate to 40MPH

If you are in 4th, the car will happily handle it.

If you are in 2nd, the car will effortlessly do it.

If you are in 3rd, you have the best of both worlds.

You drive a manual.  Use the box for two things, economy and performance.  Dont spoil your ONLY two advantages by wasting them.

Not a dig, but without the misfire I'm currently having, I get that figure from an Auto....... And I have a heavy foot! 

EDIT:  I also have a Citroen Relay 120BHP Diesel piece of crap.  I can (with over a tonne of weight in the back) accelerate from 0-60 in under a minute (maybe) in which gear? SIXTH!  That doesnt say it is the most economical thing to do though!

Yes but generally, if a manual is held in the highest gear possible at the lowest speed possible without labouring the engine, that would be the most economical.

If you say you get 28 mpg urban driving in a 3 litre automatic, I'd say there's no way on earth I'd believe you, or your trip computer is bust.

I had a pre-facelift 3.0 estate auto for a few months, i easily, easily, got 30mpg with a light right foot.

With a manual, i'd expect mid 30's. As said, your labouring the engine, 4th gear at 20mph is going to labour it, and badly too. Use the gearbox properly, and with clean breathers, mid 30's is easily achievable.

I don't think I am labouring the engine. Anyway how did you get that from an auto? I used to get about 20 mpg. Half way through my current tank I'm on 17.8, that cannot be right. I've got no vac leaks, fully serviced, clean oil, clean breathers etc etc. Most of my journeys are short, but still?

3.2 auto here .. and those sort of figures are the equivalent of what I get towing !!! Solo on a run at a constant 70 I easily get just over 30. Short journeys around 27. In town very variable but mid 20's. Towing about 20.

IMHO the most efficient RPM range is between 2000 and 3000, don't floor it to get there and don't drive up to something then smack the brakes. Anticipation and smoothness are what you are after.

Dang.. I get 21-22mpg out of the 3.2 (auto) tootling between home and work down the country lanes..

I guess a service is on the cards!

Well a few weeks back I did a 310 mile round trip to pick up the MV6. In the 3.0 auto Elite I was sat at 80 with cruise on and I got 32 and a bit mpg (including alot of 50 mph zones).

I think it could be relevant that my first tank since then I'm only getting 17.8 mpg, or at least that's what the trip computer says. I suspect there's an element of estimation in there aswell, why else would my mpg go down like that?
The mpg doesn't seem to correspond with my fuel gauge and how many miles I've done already. I know my fuel gauge very well!

I always drive smoothly with lots of anticipation, with the odd short blast. I prefer relaxed, quiet driving.
