Guess the spark plug’s age
« on: 11 October 2010, 22:12:07 »

Don’t know why I decided to replace my plugs today – the service book shows they were done only 7K ago.  Glad I did though!

The plugs don’t look too bad for colour, but the centre electrodes are eroded to below the level of the ceramic insulation.  I can’t see this happening in just 7000 miles so I think somebody at the garage must be telling porkies.  And one of the rubber plug shrouds is missing completely!   :o  Can’t believe the spring hasn’t slipped off or started arcing.

So how old do you reckon this is?

Probably put in at the factory. ;).........having said that, they may have to many electrodes to be factory fit. :-/

And the rest, I reckon. Service interval is 80k for the 4 electrodes. Mine looked pretty well untouched at 40k, with half of that on LPG.

Allegedly replaced at 39K, 55K, 84K, 95K and 110K, according to the service stamps.  Betty Swallocks if you ask me.  The car is now at 117K.

They are NGK plugs – does this mean that they can’t be original?  In which case I guess they must be the 39K ones.  No idea why the garage would even bother to tick such frequent changes.

FWIW I’ve used the two electrode GM ones – but they will probably be replaced in just a couple of hundred miles when I do the cam cover gaskets, assuming they are well contaminated by then.

Oh, and the camera is a bog standard Fujifilm point and shoot idiot-proof job.  I know nothing about cameras but it calls itself J110w.

And all I did was point and shoot!   :)  (and crop in PSP)

What make and type were the plugs, some plugs have a slightly recessed centre electrode as standard

The plugs are NGK BKR6EQUP.  Now you mention it the four electrode arms don't reach over the cenrte insulation, but just up to it.

The car is indeed 2001, October I believe.  I know you have a memory for detail but can you recall which plug was used in which year?   8-)

Why? Is there something we, owners of MY2001 2,6, should be worried about? Other than smoke on start-ups...
