before i bought the Mv6, i looked briefly at the BMW 540

then looked at the servicing and running costs, and fuel economy.

and decided another Miggy was the better bet.

M5 would be nice, but those 535d's are seriously quick and still give 45mpg!

Passat, but research the dsg box fully, ime they work very well, when they work, can be troublesome.

beware of big puddles in the passat....  they can detach the wheel arch linings, which then foul the wheel/hub/driveshaft and basically cause horrible smelly problems....

(brother has a passat....     which he generally likes.....   and drives a LOT.....  lives near Stuttgart..   but visits UK regularly by car....  )

I don't like the passat really other than the CC but even the saloon R36 look nice. I wouldn't have any other passat mind you.

I love the Passat CC especially is R form. If i had that sort of money it would either be that or a BMW 335i or 335d coupe.

I think everyone I know with a DSG gearbox has had some kind of wallet-lightening experience with it.

. and they're great when at 10 tenths but seriously tedious at all other times, IMHO. Rather have a manual, personally.

agreed I would also go for manual..  both dsg and smg are fine when they are new .. but if they fail, specialists not only take your wallet, and an extra arm and a leg.. ;D
