I have been thinking of all the accidents I have been involved in:
Number 1 c.1977 Cortina Estate rammed up the back as
stationery in a queue at road works.
Number 2. c.1987 Reversed into bollard when checking my tyres at my local filling station, and dented rear nearside panel.
Number 3. c. 1989 Went forward and dislodged rear bumper of a car that I thought had entered a roundabout.
Number 4. c. 2009 Rammed up the back of my Omega CDX whilst stationery letting a '999' police car out of a junction.
Number 5 Oct 2010 Whilst stationery white van man turns against the side of my Elite's front bumper.
Number 6 Oct 2010 Whilst travelling at 2mph to enter a Sainsbury's car parking space OAP runs forward in his car and rams the nearside of my Elite
Not bad I suppose over 1 million miles of driving, often at high speed on the busiest of Britain's roads!
To add to the actual and to emphasise how my misfortune comes when stationery, or travelling very slowly I will list near misses:
Number 1 c.1978 Massive, fully loaded, rigid wheel base 4 axle lorry comes within an inch of wiping me out when
stationery in Ford Cortina estate at a road work queue on a steep hill when his brakes fail to stop him, and he just swings out into a suddenly clear road and, still trying to get his brakes to work, goes past me, and two cars in front before finally stopping parallel to a fourth car!! He is deathly white as I pass him in my cab, and I am delighted to return home to my 3 lovely children!!
Number 2 near miss: whilst stopped on the hard shoulder of the M20 at 0100, Christmas Day 2005, to change a wheel, a continental 44 tonner appears to go straight through me, with complete blackness, very warm rubber and hot engine smells, with water being sprayed all over me from the hard shoulders cats eyes, as I am pressed into the side of my Toyota Carina II. Lightness reappears for me to see the artic continuing to travel half way over the hard shoulder!!! Expect to see my body in pieces, and I am now dead but somehow still seeing, a feeling that last for days (in fact in a way right up to today!!)
So, speed it NOT my problem!!!
