Long Drive
« on: 16 November 2010, 22:12:15 »

We are looking at driving up to Scotland in the next few weeks and any advice on what precautions i can take with the car before i set off would be appreciated. I have recently done an oil and filter change about 3000 miles ago but the plugs haven't been changed for about 10000 miles. Tyres are good so what do you people recommend, Apparently it will take about 12 hours to get there.
Need to purchase a Scottish phrase book i think.

I and alot of other people change their oil every 3000 miles, so if you do it's due now!

I don't want to state the obvious, but you asked! I'd check all levels in the car, tyre condition/tread/pressures, check for leaks. Have you got adequate breakdown cover? You wouldn't want to get caught out!

I have every confidence in Omegas, but still carry fire extinguisher, first aid kit, hi vis jacket, tow rope, tyre compressor, jump leads, wind-up torch, small cones, maps, spare water (and drinking water), food, blanket, tool kit, inspection lamp, power pack, chocks, jack, spare wheel. It doesn't take up that much room in the back.

I like to be self sufficient and wouldn't want to get caught out!

Needless to say, it's getting to the time where you might encounter bad weather up there, so some supplies, blankets, a folding shovel, plenty of screenwash, if any tyres are getting low, may be worth changing them (check them carefully for damage too). Snow chains? :-/

A quick check over for leaks underneath might spot something and avert a breakdown. Ditto unusual noises in the engine bay.

Check brake pads and disks for wear.

Plugs should be fine to 40k.

A good clean of all the windows, check of the wiper blades and washer nozzles can save frustration on a long drive, especially with the sun low in the sky.

12 hours? I've done Aviemore to Four Marks in 9. That was with a 160 mile fuel range too. ;D

I drove up along the a68 a few years back in my old senator. What a journey! I had heaters on and plenty screenwash but my windscreen kept freezing over I couldn't stop it!

I got on the M90 and thundered along it was great!

you might have to dye your hair ginger, paint your face blue and white, and knock a few inches off your height somehow to blend in with the locals!
