Just an idle thought: do any of these modern, 'car based' 4 x 4`s, have proper 4WD features like; low ranges? (and perhaps more usefully) a centre-difflock? :-/

It`s surprising how much I`m relying on the Disco`s centre-difflock traversing slick, ice and snow cloaked hills. ;)

Call me old fashioned, but I cant see how anyone in this country who isnt a farmer actually needs a 4x4. :-/

Essential workers for one.  The old dear had a LR for doing her rounds caring for pensioners and convalescing/disabled.  Not much comfort for someone bedridden and not living in a residential area that the DN can't make it because of some snow.

Now THAT is a bit special!  ;D

Austin did a development of the Moke on the same lines for the armed forces - twin engined with single controls apart from the gearlever I think.  Apparently it was a mad old thing too.

you can do a great amount with just proper tyres.

I have a Discovery and use it for a) just bumpling around Tynedale, b) towing stuff on the trailer, c) towing the horse and d) carting my tools across fields to stranded machinery. All uses for which it's ideal. Mind you, you have to thing twice about going any great distance, 'cos 16mpg takes its toll.

regarding the snow, yes the Disco is more capable than a car, but only once the snow is deeper than ten inches or so.

Nope. There are 4  roads out of this village and each one involves going down a steep hill and then up a steep hill to the main road. ;)
