I suppose it depends what you are towing and how far. I bought an A frame and its been brilliant

They aren't bad Rob but you need a 2nd person to steer the towed car. I also have an A-Frame and it's a doddle to setup and use

It looks very similar to Machine Mart's, if it's the same they're not that good. When mine folded itself in half by the spring I borrowed a solid home made bar, .... far better.
But an A frame is better still.

got to say the person driving the towedcar has to keep the bar reasonably straight or it can bend,
mine has towed a fully laden transit twin wheel high top 45miles no problem, it also towed a transit transporter with a mondeo on  the bed no worrys, the mig didnt even break into a sweat either!!

ive got a homemade one made from a scaffolding bar with a "D" link (think thats what they are called)  welded to each end ive towed loads with it including a transit van and found it a lot better than the shop versions
unfortunatly its a bit bent now thanks to my mate as i towed a car up my drive and turned left onto main road and the tit forgot to take the steering lock off! resulting in a smashed bumper and a bar thats now shaped like the front of a mondeo (still tows ok tough)

Sorry to go off topic slightly, Do you get any damage to the towing car whe using the A-Frames?  It just seems from looking at them that there could be some damage done to the bumpers?

I suppose you could do if the car was any lower than an Omega, the lower rubber strip on an Omega was just compressed when I used an A frame to tow one. No damage done though.

It doesn't quite work like that  . The tow ball of the towing car is generally the same height from the road no matter what car it is,  the towed car is connected to the A frame via the lower wishbones so what determines whether the A frame will rub is the relationship between the height of the lower wishbones to the height of the bottom edge of the front bumper from the ground.

we used a tow dolly to take this car the 70 odd miles up to my place, needless to say there was no tailpiece left on the exhaust when we got home
