(From memory) = they are nothing more than a resistor. They fool the CTS (coolant temp sensor) into believing the engine is colder than it actually is - and hence the ECU makes it run a bit richer by adding more fuel.

My personal opinion is that they are a bloody awful idea and should be avioded like the plague...

Time would be much better spend looking after the engine than playing with such gadgets - such as making throttle bodies and breathers squeaky clean, oil and filter changed... so on so forth...

Nope its not, there is a German bloke selling a chip that is i direct exchange. I bought one, and thought it was def an increase in power, then i got a bit worried so bought an M-Tek chip, and there is no difference, infact ill go out on a limb to say after 6 months i'm not that impressed with the M-tek chip, and you are better off buying the e-bay one. I know theres no back up from the e-bay chip, but i've never needed any from M-Tek so it doesnt realy make any difference

I actually only paid £36 for the German one in an open auction so don't 'buy it now' wait an open auction.

The 234bhp is basically crap, i've had mine RR twice, it got 228 the first time and 244 the second, but i know the 228 is more likely

It's rare to find a rolling road that can be believed too. Unless they did a proper coastdown to establish the losses I'd take any figures with a pinch of salt. What would be worth doing, however, is a run before fitting chip and a run after, on the same day. This will tell you what the difference is.

Unless it is actually a chip (a 28 pin EPROM if memory serves) that fits inside the ECU I woulnd't touch it with a barge pole.

He used to do these chips on auction basis, so I got 1 for £19. A slight improvement but really nothing to write home about. Saying that though, I have not had any problems with it. Kept the original chip also, just in case.

If it's not a resistor to the CTS, What is it then? How does it attach, and how does it function?

It's an EPROM to replace the one in the ECU itself. In other words, the chip that contains the firmware that carries out all ECU functionality in addition to the maps that tell the ECU how much fuel and ignition advance the engine needs at given combinations of speed and load.

Basically, someone has hacked the factory ECU and found the locations of the above in the code, and has made some changes to it to enhance the performance.

Yes, at £60, it will be a chip with a new map, in much the same way as the MTek one.  However, I suspect that at that price, it is simply an illegal copy of a performace chip...

But if its half the price, or even a third of the price, what difference does it make if it is illegal, theres no way I or anyone buying it could know that, and it is sold as an their own chip.

Whose to say the more expensive ones aren't copies of the cheaper ones???

Not that i am implying that in anyway whatsoever

Hence the reason why i siad i do not believe the 244 result, which came back with a near 100bhp transmission loss!! But when it was roaded at 228 a number of standard cars came within 1 bhp of the book figure, hence why it is more realistic

agree, though no comeback....   ....but if it is a copy, do not discuss here ;)

True... It's easy to copy them and practically impossible to copy protect them so I wouldn't be surprised. Rich pickings too. Beg / borrow / steal one legit chip, copy it onto blank chips for a quid or two a go and sell on e-bay.  >:(

Given that you're replacing the firmware in the ECU itself and ALL settings it's absolutely critical that you get the correct chip for your engine and for the exact variant of ECU you have. All the more reason to go to someone reputable.
