Which 4X4?
« on: 15 December 2010, 14:09:39 »

I'm in the process of looking for a 4x4.  Need to tow quite a lot, or another elite would have been bought last week!!
What would you OOf people go for?
It has to be a LWB budget up to 2K fuel doesn't matter, auto prefered cos of the towing but not essential!!

I sold a 4x4 (grand cherokee) to buy the mig estate for towing and wouldn't go back,I find the mig much more stable.Obviously if you need to tow off road then its a different ballgame

Depends on what you want to tow, I tow a lot, some 4x4 will not tow much at all the smaller ones in particular, but if you want to tow a large caravan you will need a big vehicle, the older shoguns or Disco's are the best bet, spares are cheao and plentyfull for the disco.

Still considering an omega, as there train weight is quite high, as been mentioned before better than some maller 4x4's!!

We tow a lot of cars around, recently we've had omega's Kia Sedona,s Mondeo so something bigger would suit better I think!!  Have seen a couple of cherokee had one in the past and was a great car, also considering the Shogun Sport?  Not sure views on these??

I can't really comment on anything other than Discoverys. I've had mine for almost 4 years now, and despite the odd problem, it's a vehicle that I cant ever imagine selling. It really is that good!

However, they can be prone to rusting, but find a good one, and it will be a fantastic bit of kit.

If you want to know what areas to look out for tin-worm on them, just drop me a PM through my profile.

I'm liking the idea of the Range Rover, is the diesel the best on to go for?  Are there different spec levels, or which one has the top spec?

Defender or Disco, or Range Rover classic absolutely. a P38 (after 1995) no way - just about the most unreliable vehicle ever. Just try and find one with fully-functioning suspension and heater controls.

Actually, I well remember an article in "Land Rover Owner", entitled "ten reasons NOT to buy a P38". They're truly shocking to deserve that accolade from a LandRover mag.

agreed,p38 is woeful for having so many issues and the 2.5td is gutless and thirsty in auto form and not much better as a (rare) manual

I've had my P38 4.6HSE for 4 years.

Has never let me down, fully functioning heating and suspension.

In fact spent more on the wifes Omega since she's had it (nearly 2 years)  than the Rangie in 4.

regarding 2.5td rangerover, used to take care of two of them for friends, one did have an airbag go, but i serviced them to bnw specs not range intervals and the black one last time i looked had 235k on it the blue one had 190 both had no problems all the time i was serviceing them, except for things like leak off pipes, brake wear on pads oh and selector switch on g,box also needed cleaning a couple of times, did get asked to sort a red vogue dhse, got there and it was a non start, got it firing but very roughly, asked him how often it had been serviced, the answer was.................................... had it 4.5years and never touched it!!! it needed another engine!!!

Got to be a Rangie. Have a late 2001 P38 4.0.

Faultless - its been through fields, towed all sorts and trampled through 2 feet of snow.

Faults - Usual nonsense on any similar vehicle - heated seats, bulb in heater unit.

Jag is going - so in love with the Rangey that were buying a newer l322 - anyone going 4x4 really should go Rangey.
