4.2 TD landcruiser 80, king of the road and high spec depending on model. I have a 1996 GS 4.2 TD and have replaced the suspension and bushes, timing belt and all oils and it is fantastic. No real rust issues, build quality is superb over landrovers, 3 diff locks, loads of power and comfort. Can get them with 5 or 7 seats.

You pays your money and takes your choice, landrovers are good till they break or rust, which they do often

Cheers,
Iain

Hi Daz,

True enough but landrovers have it built in, lucas electrics and poor metals with no protection do them no favours, always something to fix. I've had no problems at all with the landcruiser in 4 months, just keeps on going, and can't grudge it on fuel either, getting over 300 miles out of a tank and thats me driving it like I stole it ;D

Hmm, I've been thinking about getting a Range Rover on and off last few months...

And yesterday I was speaking to someone I know quite well that has around 3-4 range rover classics on his farm which havn't been used for months. (Hes also got 4-5 Discos by the sound of it too)

Need to go have a look in daylight some time.

Dont know much about them other than ones a 300tdi? and anothers had an engine transplant from a GMC truck? was told its a 6.2L V8 Diesel  :P

I also know that one is a Vouge, and another an SE? And all the air bags work on at least one of them.

I will be honest, I know bugger all about Range Rovers, But the 6.2L Diesel v8 sounds like fun, however I guess getting insurance on it maybe hard (im 23).

Any thoughts?

I think most/all quattro's which have autoboxes are of the 'fluid' kind, ie like the Omega, put them in D and go....

Even current shape ones I was sat in the Audi dealer near work, just had an auto stick and D, no flappy things behind steering wheel.

Something like this:

Saw this, notice stuck 'off-roaders'

A8 powers through...

While i love bit of RWD action in snow, mother T wants something a bit more 'planted'

Yeah I saw that, we started off thinking about an A6 All Road, but it looks like all Quattro systems do the business in the snow!

A8 is one i'd go for, cabin build on the A8 makes the Omega feel like a 80's Fiat  ::)

The A8 is the nicer looking of the other Audis. I'm not struck on the Allroad, it looks like they ran out of paint to do the bumpers.  ::) ;)

Yeah they remind me of the Renault Scenic 4x4 they did, which just looked like they stuck bits of plastic on  ::)

Ground clearance is not something we or most folk need on main roads, its better traction.

A8 Interior on the new ish shapes stays same too, outside had a refresh for that new corprate grill around 2005.

I really do like the centre console / gear shift area, everything just at reach with left hand, media controls, volume, ect. Huge amount of space for left foot, everything felt sooo solid. Media / Radio console was logical too, very simple to use.

Rear space is impressive as is the boot, those V8 TD's don't have shift and sound like petrol from inside!

Down sides will be when it does go wrong will cost a fortune, they are generally bomb proof
