Keep the Omega or go back to a Vectra B
« on: 15 January 2011, 17:49:51 »

Basically, I love my Omega to bits, but for some reason my mind has been reverting back towards Vectra B's, as its a while since i've had one and I quite like them tbh.

I've been offered, as a direct swap for my Omega, a Y reg Vectra SRi 2.6 V6 Manual. It has about the same mileage as the Omega, has had cambelt & aux belt done, decent history with it, good condition all the usual etc. Slightly shorter MoT and the tax is expiring end of this month (i've just taxed the Omega so i'm currently trying to negotiate the deal with the Vectra having 6 months tax on it).

As said it will be a straight swap for mine, which is a 2000 (X) Omega 2.5 V6 CDX Auto.

Half of me says that I should go for it, the other half of me says that I should stick with the Omega. Indeed, driving the Omega this afternoon put a smile on my face but I can't help think that the Vectra might just do the same and I can imagine it being a fair bit quicker.

Obviously i'm expecting a lot of biased comments towards the Omega (I don't know why  :o) but what do you guys think? Obviously I know that the ultimate decision rests with me, but any input would be appreciated  :y

Married/Single ??   Kids/Great Aunts ???  Boot space required ??  Comfort level required ?? as just said  FWD v RWD ???

Omega is a large, comfortable, load carrying beast, that can be chucked about extremly well on the occasions the blood needs a bit of movement....

Vectra is smaller, lighter, carries less, but does have some good points (I'll try really hard to think of them .. promise ..   :)  )

Age: 22
Status: Single (well, g/f but no kids or anything)

Car is used for Commuting 16 mile round trip to work each day (mixture of dual carriageway and town driving) also used for some business use...

More often than not i'm in the car myself. I don't lug huge loads, so boot space isn't important although from previous Vectra B experiences the boot is OK (at least enough for 2 bags to go in if me and missus go away for a weekend).

As said, primary use is to commute to work and cover some business mileage which is mainly a 40mile round trip each Friday. I don't cover huge distances generally, but I like a car thats comfortable but at the same time, can be a bit of fun. I sought my Omega out specifically due to it being an Automatic (its what I wanted at the time) and although I can get away with it, I feel it probably does "numb" the driving experience a little...

Not driven a 2.6 Vectra-B, but have a few 2.5 Vectra-Bs.

Personally, never liked the Vectra-B. Too small for such a large car, if that makes sense, suspect handling, and constant need for front tyres ::). The A post and windscreen is right up against your nose, another one of my pet hates.

I good friend had a 2.5 Vectra-B CDX (manual) which we put up against my 3.0l auto Omega MV6.  Obviously the Omega won that battle, but I was surprised how far back he was.

On paper, the Vectra-C is a better car than the Vectra-B, but the powerful ones are let down by unbelievably bad handling.  I suspect even the worlds largest Vauxhall fan (eg, Marks DTM Calib) wouldn't make an attempt to defend the Vectra-C chassis...

But I suspect that for a 22yr old, the Vectra has a better status than the Old Mans Car, the Omega ;D

Keep the Omega...  Much better car, more comfortable than the Vectra and far superior handling than the Vectra....

You also know what condition your car is in and know what needs doing when, do you know what needs doing to the Veccy???

I once remember a writer for one of the BMW Magazine (I think it was Total BMW but I can't be sure) passing a comment saying that "the Omega drives more like a BMW than any BMW owner would care to admit" - he also heavily slated the Vectra B in the same breath, saying that alongside the MK3 Astra he feels that they are the worst cars Vauxhall ever produced.

Personally I feel that statement was a bit strong because I don't mind Vectra B's...i'm indifferent at the moment and I think it will be a case of sleeping on it. Theres nothing to say that this Vectra isn't a shed anyway so the deal might not go ahead depending on the condition of it, if I did make the decision to do it. I do enjoy driving the Omega though and the handling of it, due to the RWD setup is better than any other Vauxhall i've driven (i've always found the equivalent Fords to be better, with regards to FWD Vauxhall's i've owned int he past).

Only you really know what you want the car to do.  I used to own a 2.5 SRI V6 Vectra B, and engine was absolutely fabulous......the rest of the car I found to be...... just okay I afraid. No where near as comfy as the Omega either  :-/ :-/

Keep the mig.
Vectra B is among the worst cars Opel/Vauxhall ever produced.
We've had a few at work, they were so bad that I asked to be given the Vectra A instead (Cavalier in UK I think).
My friends also had a few not a single one was content with the car.
Lousy seats, even worse exhaust systems (I know a few who changed 3 exhausts in 30,000 miles and it was from first 30 000 miles since they were the first owners.) EGR valves were awful etc etc...

simple - it's front-drive, so that automatically puts it in the second-division.

vectras are horrible.

no offence mate but theres no contest.

1. RWD
2. Boot space
3. no savings in petrol
4. comfort

these things make the omega better :)
