Is EP90 the same as SAE90?

I need some of the latter and I cant find any.  I was told that EP90 is the same.... :-/

I suppose strictly speaking SAE90 refers to a monograde 90 weight oil whereas an "EP" oil has "extreme pressure" capability (it has additives to cope with the additional pressure it is placed under when lubricating the meshing surfaces of gears). The SAE 90 spec may even include this too.

For practical purposes EP oil will work fine and is indeed what you want if the application is a gearbox or diff.

Now you just need to decide between Gl-4 and GL-5.

It's for a seagull outbaord gearbox which requires SAE90.  From what you say this should do?

Yep. It should be fine. I'd try and find a GL-4 if you can, as I've heard (maybe an urban legend) that GL-5 is not compatible with some yellow metal parts.

However, it doesn't sound like a demanding application so something "liquid and slippery" will probably suffice.

If we're sourcing it in the kitchen I'd be happier with butter or lard. Maybe veggie oil, although it might be a little on the thin side. If you're a tart who likes to pay for the name, extra virgin olive oil, of course.

Likewise, if you need it sooner I've got a half full 5l container of gear oil. I have a feeling it's 75w90  but it'll do the job. Save you buying a bottle for what I suspect is only going to be a dribble actually required.

Thanks for the offer guys, but I have gone and bitten the bullet already.  Today, I'm stripping the exhast gearbox for a little fettle in prep for this year's sailing season.
