Have I bought the wrong car.
« on: 06 February 2011, 10:50:25 »

Is anybody else on here just not having a good Omega experience. I have never owned a car that has been so unreliable, so unlucky and just such a drain. I am really starting to hate my V6 CDX.
Never know what is going to happen next with it, whether it will start, run and if so for how long until the next thing goes wrong. >:(
Probably not the best place to be having a go at them and if you are sensitive sorry, but, it's good to talk sometimes! Hopefully somebody here can understand and reassure me that I am not just throwing my money away into a bottomless pit.
It is certainly the last one (last petrol for sure) I will own and if it gets to the end of the insurance year without me driving it into a lake or setting fire to it will be lucky.
Oh, and it's MOT time soon........  :'(

From reading the Omega help thread its fair to say that some mig's do have their fair share of problem and some cars will have more issues than others.

They are amazing value for money and if something does goes wrong the low initial outlay compared to a 5 series or A6 ect should make things hurt a little less that if you had spend 3 or 4 grand on a car.

Depends how much you like omega's and enjoy owning it really :y

It's not all Omega's but I must admit, I did a lot of work on mine when I first got it as I'm a bit fussy and expect every button to do what it's supposed to ::)

That said, once you're on top of it, as long as you maintain it properly it should serve you well

In 7.5yrs of ownership, my MV6 has been very good. Its suffered on crank sensor failure (at an inconvenient time ::)), and developed a bizarre, partially coincidental fault during its LPG conversion last year.

Other than that, I really can't complain.  Except about the handbrake. Bloody useless thing. I hate it. Passionately. But handbrake aside, and no mention of air fresheners, I just seem to have to do a little proactive work every now and again, and just replace the occasional service item.

My Tractor/TB2, an Elite TD, which I had for 2yrs, once 'we' (the forum) had sorted out its problem, was also mostly trouble free, except ripping the sump plug out at 80mph ::) (thats not the cars fault ;D)

My Elite, admittedly doesn't get much use (about 1k since bought last summer), has been flawless as well, though maintenence has been a pain do to full dealer service history...

I know.. I was one of the unlucky ones who find this bottom very deep.. but it has an end, depending on the previous oner(s) care about the car >:(

imo before going into more expense, let it checked by a more experienced miggy owner and do some calculations...

Some will be worse than others of course, but as with any car, there WILL BE SERVICE AND REPAIR WORK REQUIRED. Given the age of theses cars, newest will be 7 years old by now, 8 in June, it has to be expected IMO.

Some diy will be necessary, it's the price of a cheap car, the alternative is to spend considerably more on a newer car, and even then there's no guarantee it will be trouble free.

I get that old cars start to need work and to be fair this is the first Omega I have had, although I have had a lot of Vauxhalls. So, I don't want top tar them all with the same brush.

I wouldn't mind really if the things that have happened had done so gradually. But, things started going wrong from about the 5th day of ownership. Also, a lot of them were to be expected of the age (2000 reg and apparently 83,000 miles, although sometimes I wonder....) but I just wish they hadn't had it all at the same time.

It developed a missfire within a week of buying it and we all know how expensive that can be (unless you know ElitePete). On diagnostics the crank sensor came up. The replacement was faulty, so had to get a second one fitted (didn't cost me because of the parts warranty). Some bozo whipped the drivers wing mirror off in the snow. It's still held on with gaffer tape as I frankly can't be a**d to fix it. Bit of a fashion statement I think!!! It has water pipe leaks after being stood for a while in the winter, at least I hope it is just pipes as I have found a few. It got a flat battery but I can forgive that as it was stood for a while. I got the cambelt be changed, which again is routine maintenance and I knew that it needed doing when I bought it. Even the drivers electric window switch has came loose. The radio needs a new code after the battery. Xenon headlight went. Level sensor went. Last but not least I need cam cover gaskets.

In short, I am sick of it and I am wondering if I have bought a lemon. It was meant to be a workhorse/tow car to keep the miles off our nice car, hence I bought it for less than a grand. I have done 2000 miles in it and the cheap run around now owes me almost the original price again. I dread the MOT got a feeling some bushes are worn!!!!

Ok guys. Enough moaning from me as it does no good to be a sour puss. Don't wanna ruin anybodies day ;D. I honestly do like the car. Comfiest car I have driven, I don't want to give up on it as underneath there must (?!?!?!?) be a good car. I have owned a lot of dumps as a kid and always got them nice so I know it gets better.

Anybody want an Omega lol, I geeve you gooood prrrice :y

Only joking.

Hold in there Matt there will be light at the end of the tunnel!  :) My elite has been the same everytime i sort one thing i find a couple of others that ned doing but my plan is (and im nearly there) getting everything mechanical sorted then start attempting the to sort the niggles. Since ive owned the car in november ive changed the wheel bearings twice both wishbones, fuel pump and now the glows have gone and i need to new rear shocks but its nearlly there so am pretty happy at the min got to admit though a couple off weeks ago i was in the same mindset as yourself and was ready to break her and sell her that way but im glad i never now as she nearlly there! ;D Like i said hold on because when everything starts getting sorted ansd shes going like a dream youll love her :y

mate, ive had loads of things go wrong. i think of it more as a classic car (and to me it is classic) as opposed to a workhorse thats to be run into the ground!

on the day i got it home...

the rear window stopped working
the drivers door needed a new motor
and the cambelt needed doing (but i knew that s it was on 69000 miles and no history to say it had been done!

then the central locking stopped (part of the door motor problem) so until it was fixed had to open it manually by key and the alarm would go off  :D :D :D :D

then new tyres, then the bonnet wouldnt open, then the back came off the drivers seat.....

you would have thought this would have sent me insane.....

however i cant tell you how much i love the car. i have built a rapport with it. and despite all these things is the best car ive ever owned.

my answer would be just get a list of al the things that need doing at one time and save up to get them done. i think youll love it when its not playing you up.

the other option is to get another one  ;)

TBH Matt, frustrating as it is, most of the things you have stated are to be expected as maintenance.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't pay a penny for my Omega (swapped it for a Classic Range Rover) but spent the best part of £2000 on it within 3 months :o :o Admittedly that included a LPG kit but it had 4 Tyres, Cambelt Kit, Camcover Gasgets and Breather Clean, Full Service, Rear Shocks (wish I'd bought new instead of 2nd hand), HBV, wishbones, crank sensor, brake pads all around etc...

All service type items but :'( :'( Since then <touches wood!> it's been pretty much faultless for the 60k odd. Replaced the wishbones again last year, but I consider these a service item along with brakes/tyres/exhaust/oil etc...

Hope that might make you feel a little better

Ha ha,

Onwards and upwards then. Me and "Pauline" will get there in the end I suppose.

To Webby the Bear (great name), it was bought as a workhorse but NOT to be run into the ground, I like my cars clean and tidy. I still wash it every week and hoover regularly hoping it will apreciate the TLC!!! I know what you mean about the rapport. I just suspect yours is nicer than mine at present.

It will be nice to get some clear and fairly stress free miles out of her though.

It will come ;) ;) Once you get on top of everything they are superb mile munchers. Mine went to the south of Italy and back in September... 3500 miles in 10 days and was superb :y :y

I wouldn't think twice about getting in it now and driving the length and breadth of the country i I needed to :y :y
