5 cylinder vw 2.5tdi
« on: 18 February 2011, 22:33:42 »

yeuck!!! ive just don the pump timing belt on one its a total pain in the butt to set up,
Anyone ever done one?

especially as the car had broken down,( the fault was the nut on the injection pump had undone itself allowing the cog to fall off and wreck the belt) cambelt was fine at the other end of the engine, it just wouldnt run till i stripped it and found the cog off, stupid thing is i spent 3 hours trying to set the timing perfectly after being told it has to be set by a computer to get it right ,
wont bore you with the procedure to set it but its complicated and can take umpteen goes to get it anywhere near right, without the corect vagcom? system to set the  pump timing,  as it is so critical,
the owner took it on a test drive and was over the moon at how well it ran, however he wont believe me it has to be set up by computer for the economy and power, so he wont spend the extra money to have it set by vw, (takes an hour apparently)it does pull well now and he says better than before the belt went, but the fact remains it needs setting up properly! there is no visible smoke when driving it, but when following you can see a curl of black smoke around the tailppe, when  its at gear change point, so my question is  this

is it likely to do any damage with him driving it like this? anyone know? :y

I reckon he used to cheat though... I got 3 of them in 10 Days ::) ::) (He was on holiday though to be fair ;D ;D)

Strangely enough, we had an agreement... Whoever did the VW didn't have to do any MOT's that day ;D ;D

I'd put it firmly in the owners court and record on any receipt given that the car MUST be set up correctly as you say, if the owner decides not to do so thats his risk entirely....?

Concidered buying one of these.....  once !    ;D

strangely enough, had a drive in one that had been chipped, used it over a week as owner was away and he said just use it, so i did and was well impressed with economy and power and the interior fitting(atlantis model)with seats that turned into a very comfy bed, sink night heater etc etc was well impressive, started looking then in earnest but couldnt find one i liked usual thing so gave up, then i got this job to do and suddenly they are a little lower on my list of wants!! :y
