Insurance complaints backlog
« on: 19 February 2011, 20:13:46 »

Got a long standing complaint running against Direct line. They have given their final response on the matter and we have taken it further to the ombudsman as they suggested. The ombudsman have found in our favour but have advised that they are so inundated with similar cases that they won't be able to judge on a final settlement for 6 further months.

Now I know Direct line where snowed under dealing with claims at the time of the incident, they where hopeless, and unresponsive even then. On a previous incident, possibly a year earlier, they settled in full because they had lost the file, and a call centre jobsworth admitted they where a shambles even then also.

Not all the ombudsman cases will be direct lines of course, but of all the complaints raised, not all wil be upheld, not all will be followed up, and not all will be upheld by the ombudsman to get to the queue my case is in, so looking at the process involved, that's a hell of a lot of cases.

So IMO it just confirms what I suspect some of us already knew, insurance industry, ESP car insurance, is in a right state.

Directline quoted me near double the highest quote from the comparison sites, it almost felt like they didn't want the business. Reading this i'm thinking maybe they do but only at silly margins so they can cover all the outstanding ombudsman claims?

Claim involves conflict of interest between bank of Scotland owned insurers, ie Directline and Tesco insurance. Always seems to go 50/50 and they show little interest persuing the claim in such cases. Last 3 drivers to drive into my car where all covered by Tesco ins. All ruled 50/50 by direct line, all over turned by complaints procedure, eventually!

So yes, good news indeed. Although not sure if won by default, incompetence or what. But there you go.

But yes, I take it that DL are so over subscribed they can't cope. Hence the price increase so many of us have seen. Good way to keep new customers down. Certainly threatening to leave didn't sway the renewal quote at all.

Should have left them long before I did tbh, now with Elefant  :-/
