Alternative Car
« on: 05 March 2011, 13:44:04 »

Hi all,

Read in the paper this morning that if things don't improve or get worse in Libya then we'll be looking at £2.03 a litre according to Alan Duncan. This being the case the Omega may have to go. What you have as an alternative?

Just wondering :)

If cash is all important. Any reliable alternative will cost more than the fuel Increase to buy. Where's the saving? Drive more economically perhaps?

Currently playing with the "no braking" style in my calmer moments.

I use a 1.4 LPG Tigra as a run around, which I got for one of my Sons, but He decided otherwise, great little runner, being 6'2" takes a while to learn how to get in and out of them but once you've mastered that, job done.

surprisingly quiet roomy inside, tends to get used as a Van with the back seats down, loads of room in the back, picked up a couple of Mig doors and a wing from Elite Pete recently, still loads of room leftover.

Yep, depreciation is about zero on our Omegas, and will probably become negative when their true worth is recognised. 8-) 8-) 8-) ::) 8-) 8-) 8-)

trouble is, Omegas are worth sod all. Any change in car, is going to result in costs, which will take a lot longer to repay.

My LPG costs of around £700, took around 10-12,000 miles to repay.

So assuming you get something which is 40% better on fuel, its going to take you a long time to recoup the costs  ;)

I suppose for a middle of the road answer taking into account fuel costs, something enjoyable to drive, and for those not into LPG and assuming you are doing 12000 miles a year or so then you are probably lookng at an engine size of 1.9 diesel

there's plenty of cars out there for under £1000 (or waaaay under even) that are decent sized diesels (2.0l ish) some turbo some not, that pretty much all do 50mpg......

In my head, anything above 45mpg is good. (plus it means working out mpg is easy....4.5litres equals 45miles...lol)

Ive had a citroen/peugeot 1.8 non-turbo. did 50mpg no matter how you drive it but was slow at best.
The rover 420 turbo diesel i had 1999, cost me £420 and once chipped (£50) gave around 130bhp and massive torque, whilst still giving 50mpg minimum.

I think if i had to, i could sell the omega for what its worth, and buy another car which did better mpg. That is however not my perogative, as i need a big car and just SOLD the rover instead. I'm making a compromise on fuel for the added space whilst still maintaining comfort (could have just got a van again).

Personally....i think there are plenty of cars out there offering better economy in an equivalent price range to the omegas worth.

just my 2 pence
