WHY ARE OMEGAS SO CHEAP TO BUY....?
« on: 08 March 2011, 12:48:54 »

At every car auction I go to , none, and I mean NONE, go for any more than a grand, even top end models with all the toys :question

Seems a lot of car for small change.
Unloved by Joe Public it would seem, with rock bottom prices, not a sellers car.
Similar age & spec BMWs, Volvos, Mercs, etc at least double the price.
Me thinks me got a bargain.... :y.
Thoughts please....

Luxobarges have always depreciated far more than other types of vehicles in this country.  This country has always preferred the small hatchbacks and prices reflect that, more so now with the hike in fuel prices.  That combined with Vauxhall badge = not desirable for the average joe.

Car enthusiasts know better of course  :P :y

Not really a bargain. If you ever want to sell, you'll also get next to nothing for it.
I bought mine with previous experience of the model, knew it'd cost a fortune, and also knew that whatever I spent on it I'd never see again.
But......I totally love it, and don't ever want to sell it!

totally agree tony. you dont buy an omega to sell on for a profit cos that wont happen (just check auto trader to see how cheap as chips they are) but as you say there is a complete and undying love for the thing.

i had my love tested recently with all the things going wrong but i stuck in and shes a dream again.  :y :y :y

Not strictly true, I picked up a 01 2.2 cdx at the auctions, mint with one owner and 68k for £600, sold it for £1400 a week later, may have been lucky but it was immaculate ;)

i think i got mine for a steal even with the price of petrol as all the expensive bits had been done, ive just done brakes and one wheel bearing i dont think i would want to part with it as is such a rare beast , never seen another ,and the insurance was peanuts, and when the summers here im sorting the tiny rust spots on corner of both rear doors shes nearly mint.also going to mod the front end abit and stiffen her up ,beter looking than the bemmers ive had.last vauxhall i had was a caverlier 2ltr cdx always went wrong but hay ho thats cars for ya ;D

i paid £1100 for mine two years ago. unfortunately no history showing cambelt so that had to be done straight away  ::)

but instead of saying 'no thanks' and looking for another i was impatient and bought mine knowing id need to spend.

do i regret that impatience? hell no!!!  :y :y :y

Paid £1150 for mine last November - think the price was fair, but petrol has gone still more stupid in those 5 months, so would be extremely lucky to get £800 - £900 for it now, even though I've improved it a little since I bought it.

Really don't care tho - I know I'll be spending at least as much as I paid for the car on bringing it up to the condition that'll please me, and that that money is stone cold dead.

I suppose the 'bargain' is that it's rarer than similar spec Mercs and Beemers, in MV6 or Elite trim they look the business, and that V6 is a fabulous motor. Couldn't give a monkeys about badge snobbery - owning a tatty and tired BMW 325 for the money I paid for the Elite would only bring pain and heartache.
When I walk out of the door in the morning and see the old girl waiting for me, I smile, and look forward to my 12 mile commute into work. I usually arrive happy.... :)

I certainly agree that the Omega is not cheap to run but if your smitten then theres not much you can do about it, I've still got my first Omega purchased over 10 years ago and still going strong at 192.000 miles with zero breakdowns,I now have a further two and although one of those two has been an absolute nightmare to get right I've been lucky enough to find DLK who has worked his magic and transformed it,I think eventually the V6 models will stay with people like myself and may well end up becoming classics and not every day drivers because lets face it fuel prices wont be coming down ever. :-[ :y

yep totaly agree nitro. at the end of the day the cheapest new car you can get is a renault twingo (wooow i hear you cry  :o) for something like £6995.

ok its a small engine but how long would it take to recoup the costs in petrol? and a renault twingo with its lawn mower engine aint gonna get to 300k + miles which ive seen on some omegas!!!!!
