Fuel pumps are known to be a weak point, so if the owner doesn't know how old it is or won't say, you need to bear in mind if they need replacing it can cost I think around the £100 mark to replace.

Maybe a bartering point  ::)

The trick with the DTi's is the service history. Find one that hasn't had regular servicing..... walk away.

Also adding a little 2 stroke oil into each full tank of fuel helps keep the pump lubricated.

There are plenty of these engines running round with 250K+  :y

Not really necessary, even modern diesel with all it's added 'cleaners' is still quite slippery. These pumps only usually suffer mechanical damage if the fuel filter bowl is allowed to run dry...

They just give up.
One minute the car is fine, the next it won't start. Ever.

As 'VXL V6' says though, there are PLENTY of these pumps around and not only are they attached to Vx. engines, BMW, amongst others, also use them.
Some info here...

If this is like the 1.7 DTi which I'm 99% sure it is, The fuel pumps themselves aren't actually the issue, a lot of the time it's  the fuel pump ECU which again a lot of the time is repairable, it cost me £125 Inc VAT to have mine sorted on my Combo van before.

Also there is no way to tell really, mine juddered on the Monday when I put my foot down leaving a roundabout thought no more of it, Wednesday it done it again, then Friday it cut out doing 70 down the motorway then the following Monday I was at the side of the road and it wouldn't start, very annoyingly that day someone had bought it off eBay and was coming the day after. That was the quickest fuel pump ECU the man had ever done  ;D

Yeah from my experience i've seen plenty of pumps go on these cars.
Seems as though the big money as mentioned above is coding.

Pump itself can be quite cheap.
