Skoda Superb as Omega replacement
« on: 19 March 2011, 22:42:05 »

I have noticed on the forum quite a few members thinking about what they can replace their Migs with when the inevitable happens and its time to let their Omega go.....

Having just bought a 92,000 mile 2002 Superb 2.0 Classic for £1650 I think this car is in many ways a natural progression after an Omega

Why?

Well,

both are large saloons (Superb larger),

both extremely comfortable,

both very competent motorway cruisers,

both great value for money as used cars,

both very reliable (Superb basically a stretched VW Passat with Skoda badges),

both can offer good mpg figures

both offer a varied selection of engines from 2.0 petrol to V6 models, and diesels variants too....

I think in many ways the Superb offers ex Omega owners what they have come to expect and in some aspects improves on the Omega too

When I say the Superb is a stretched Passat, thats exactly what I mean....it IS a VW with Skoda badges on.

All parts are as per the Passat, build quality is as good as a Passat (if not better)

I think these Superbs are the best kept secret in motoring, once you have got over the badge snobbery and 20 year old jokes......

I have to confess that I look at Merc E320s as a potential replacement but when you hear a diseasal on the road or at the lights - modern or not - they're noisy horrible things, & I have my doubts.  :-/

quality of the mercs paint wise from 95 on is rubbish.
seen 05 vitos full of panel rust.

 ....... and Vauxhall have a good reputation for paint?  :-? :-? ;D ;D ;D ;D
Compare a similar aged Vauxhall with an equivalent BMW or Merc or other and IMO a Vauxhall doesn't really fare very well.  :(

I'm with you re the merc Andy,I have recently done some miles in both a bmw535 diesel and a merc e320 diesel both 2006 models, the BMW was ballistic but had a bloody awful ride but the merc was fantastic in every way,I want one but will have to wait a few years for the price to come my way. :'(
To the OP the superb is a nice car as well, had a drive in a 140 diesel and was impressed save for it being wrong wheel drive :y

i didnt mention vx.

if your talking mig the facelift have a slight edge over the previous shape (door tops and arches) , even so in random places where the paint is thin like the "a" posts and somewhere else i have forgotten slight blemishes are on the way.

in comparison to the french motors i mention, old 205 s 405s and 106 s  dont really rust but die price to spend wise.

Notice the new superb alot on the motorway, mostly due to the pig ugly rear end. Older models look more passat shaped so don't notice those so much.

Ime vag diagnostics is fairly awful with very fussy engine management, ESP around early 2000. Abs sensors another achilles on polo golf and passat.

Good shout though. Still fancy the Phaeton from 05 on having said all that.
