sh!t engine? *runs and hides from DTM  ;D

Seriously,  more power is known to be better as it as to work less. Hence 3.0 manual is as good on fuel as a 2.2....

As I'm known for having a light foot, someone should buy me a Monaro so I can conduct fuel tests!  8-)

So by definition, don't need a Monaro Tunster....  :P

They (V6) do run very rich from cold I am certain, can almost taste the petrol walking round the rear, and all that coasting off throttle, alright it's auto but that's not a zero fuel delivery state at lower speeds/revs. Drove a manual that's alot harsher throttle closed, yes it  will be to an extent but even so.

Wonder if it's worth a careful re map ....?   :-/

if i had a v8 under the hood i certainly wouldn't (and haven't) seen those figures returned so hat's off to you woody for economical driving, but to the op my wife has a vw polo which we bought as a cheap runabout and its ecu is so temperemental that when we first got it we spent loads getting sensors changed etc eventually we did some research and saw that this was an ecu problem and ignored the lights that came up and they eventually go away so i would never trust vw again as this was CLEARLY a known problem and they didn't re-map for us, as for a replacement to the mig i would go mv6 mazda awd and fast!!

that's just the thing - i don't drive economically.

you hardly need any throttle in the Holden to "keep up with the traffic".

recently came home from London in the Holden in the early hours. 325 miles in less than four hours including three stops. Never exceeded 2000 rpm for the entire trip.

I take it you mean the mazda 6 MPS?
256bhp AWD.
plain looking unfortunately. That is however its only downfall.
4wd is almost constant. Only dropping off when at idle and with the handbrake on lol
