Who can tell me the routine for 'cherished transfers'?
My Dad has a car that was bought complete with a personalised reg number. He wants to sell the car, but the number is worth somewhat more than the car is worth. The car is an L reg Granada Scorpio estate, and although not very common as an estate is worth only a few hundred quid & would likely be sold as a spares or repair, is there a cost to put the original number back on it before the sale? I've just recieved a quote from Regtransfers.co.uk with an offer of £1200 net  :y  :y

I just thought that someone might have had first hand experience ..... far better than wading through DVLA jargon  ;)

Is it going straight onto another motor ?

The car with the number on must MoT, Taxed and insured. If you want it to go onto another car that has to have the same, cost £80. If you would like to keep the plate to go onto another car later that will cost you £125 to keep it for one year and then £25 each year after.

The car with the plate is road legal ie taxed MOT'd & insured. The plate is to go to whoever whether a retention cert or car would be the buyers decision.

If you intend to sell the plate separate from the car for example to or via a numberplate dealer, put it onto retention but leave the nominee details blank.

If and when the dealer sells the plate for you, you will be asked to forward retention cert so that the new purchaser can be entered as the nominee and the transfer completed.

That's how it worked last couple of times I dabbled in selling plates anyway.  :y

Don't be fooled andy by regtransfers swmbo had a private plate and we let them try to sell it they had it twelve months and still didn't sell it we had to pay another £25 to continue with retention, Ended up selling on the bay in the end, and h21 is correct leave nominee details clear,

It's a pain that the car with the plate on it needs to be MOT'd etc; if I end up scrapping the Nissan I'd really like to get the plate off it (K 2 XTT, could be worth a bob or two to another ZX TT owner) .. but it strikes me that's impossible without getting it MOT'd (which might well require an uneconomical amount of welding!). Boo :(

I think - not sure! - that as long as the car with the desired plate has had tax on it in the past 6 months then it can be put onto retention.  Best put a personal visit into your local LVLO to be sure.  Oh, and it needs to be registered in your name....  ;)

It's in my name .. but it hasn't had tax in, erm, getting on for 8 years now  :-[ (It's taken me a long time to fit those new cam sprockets ..  ;D )

Ah well, if it turns out unrepairable I'll stop by the closest LVLO and find out if there's any alternative to scrapping the car with the plate on it.
