Time to move on ?
« on: 09 May 2011, 17:53:39 »

Im looking for some advice on wether or not to keep  my mini prefacelift 2000 omega or just part ex for something newer.

Good points

1.body work in good condition

2.no issues with engine or any related components ( @ 114000 )

3.interior mint

4. mot untill feb next year

Bad points.

1.cambelt overdue ( i know  :-[ )

2. aircon not working.( think it only needs a re-gas )

3. front discs warped

4. both front shocks and droplinks need replacing

5. wishbones need doing ( i have got poly bushes )

6.brakes also need bleeding

7. drivers heated seat not working ( minor and i can live with it )

my problem is can i justify spending at least £600 to £700 pounds on a car that's only worth £800 if im lucky  :-/ , i do have a vauxhall trade card which will make the discs and shocks fairly cheap but im still not sure  :-/ any thoughts

Ask yourself what you can buy for £700, the answer is £700 worth of grief if you don't know the vehicle.
Even if you aren't doing the work yourself (which would bring that £700 down a fair bit), there appears to be a few people here that are happy to do the work at sensible prices.

This is the problem that exercises many an OOFers mind.. I am tussling with the problem here too with the added issue of believe it or not scrap yards collect your car(minus any parts you want to keep) for free! And no WIM equivalent.

If you can afford the petrol and are careful with your expenditure then I would say keep it. If you change you may just be buying into a similar amount of hassle on perhaps a car without such good forum support.

Something you missed off the shopping list is getting the suspension geometry checked/adjusted by WIM. Essential after front shock change. I have two Omegas and one has had the front(and rear) geometry done and the other hasn't and they drive completely differently.

If you like the car I'd be inclined to spend the money, it's not a massive amount to spend (well not if I type it quick) if it will get the car into top condition.
And having done that you will enjoy the car that much more.
Otherwise you can sell and being a nice guy probably list out all the faults and get next to nothing for it then go out and spend whatever you get on a car which someone else has moved on because of their own problems.

And lastly there is the support on this forum which is second to none - it amazes me the patience of the gurus on here who will hand out top advice to all Omega questions even if they have already been asked 100s of times already..maybe not the place but my thanks to all those top guys.

There's your answer, as long as the bodywork is good everything else is repairable, i've kept my MFL a lot longer than I expected because it still looked good.

Unfortunately for me this last year has I think signaled the end, bonnet, front bumper and rear bumper all took hits in the ASDA car park, and the big killer all 4 doors and one arch have started to bubble quite badly. On top of that I have developed an exhaust manifold tick, will soon need tyres, wishbones, rear shocks/springs and a cam belt change.

I'd happily spend the cash on mechanical parts but rust removal always seems to end in a downward spiral and the resprayed parts never quite look as good as original. (In my case I cant even get replacement panels because I have a ridiculously rare Z266 colour code)

re-sprayed parts will look good (if the job done properly) but will have color matching problem (so the painter must be capable of preparing a color mixture to match).. you can use replacement panels of different colors but their paint must be removed completely - sanded down to primer or by means of solver until bare metal .. but not easy job I must admit..

what's the big deal about aircon? You only use it about three weeks a year?
not enough reason to get rid if that's the biggest expense.

do the windows work? :y

it'll save you fuel if you don't use it - which will help with the running costs
