I think my heads are goosed
« on: 03 July 2011, 20:50:50 »

It's been coming a while now but I have been having a few problems with over heating, I reckon it stems from the previous owner who decided it would be ok to run it short distances with a blown oil cooler (which he thought was HG) he just topped it up with water only once it had cooled down  >:(

I have long suspected some minor blockages in the heads and tonight has confirmed it.  After the wife called me last week complaining of it overheating on the way to Heathrow I thought maybe airlock as I had changed the HBV 2 days prior.  But after giving all the pipes a damn good groping the situation was no better.  When driving 70-80 on the falt no problem, gun it to 90 and the temp rises to 95-100C.  Slow down it drops again, go uphill at 70 and it rises.

So I got some of that 2 part coolant flush from holts and decided to give a good prolonged soak in the coolant system.  Backflushed several times and filled it up and took it for a spin, around town no problems, on the dual carriage way I get up to 90+ and sure enough the temp rises, I slow down and its the same.  Bugger.  When I get home I popped the bonnet and there is some definite boiling noises coming from the pipes that go through the plenum.  Double bugger.

Oh well I have some new heads from ffcgary  :y so I need to get these sorted quick before the swap over this weekend.

Anyone local fancy giving me a hand?  ::)

Symptoms sound familiar, but can't remember the cause.

Air lock/cooling related iirc. Where's Lazytinker?

I've had that before, no cold spots on the radiator and it was replaced last year with one from pinky's garage.

If it's not losing coolant and there are no other symptoms that the problem is in the heads I would suspect the radiator, or a lack of coolant circulation first. Also remember that the gauge reads the temperature of the circulating coolant. If there were blockages causing poor coolant circulation I don't think that would be reflected in the gauge temperature anyway, you'd just have a local hot spot in the engine which would potentially lead to another failure.

What about the water pump? Missing a few blades from the impeller perhaps?

Having said that, it's quite warm at the moment. Mine is certainly running 5 degrees warmer than usual under some driving conditions.

It went up to 100  for the first time yesterday on an uphill section, but that was climbing Wrotham hill towing a 1600kg trailer tower. ::)

That's just it there is a leak, quite significant too.  I suspect core plug or HG as everything else inc water pump is brand new.  So it could be that ....

I'm going to change the heads and go from there.  Kev ill take you up on the offer of your book :y

Oh, OK. Missed the bit about the leak. Could well be HGF around the rear as has been well documented, especially if the coolant has been neglected.

Mine's running hotter than normal with the higher outside temps but I suspect a partially blocked Rad as there was evidence of kseal when it was flushed >:( >:(... Trying to decide whether to just fit a new one or remove mine and try flushing it with Fernox

I never saw it had a water leak either  :-[

I have seen a number of thermosats failed closed. It sounded rather like that.
A core plug, water would flow out empting the reservoir without starting the car.

In which case a failed HG is the most likely suspect as it only leaks when running.

Oh well, I have 3 days this weekend to get the heads swapped, hopefully it should just take 1.5 but you never know.  Typical I have to do it the weekend of the Lakes so no one is around  :(
