carbs are the bain of my chuffing life!
« on: 11 July 2011, 16:17:06 »

i seem to kill carbs out of fun.
a narrowed down a problem with power and hesitation on the boat by swapping the carbs over.
ok sorted, that makes it easy, just need 1 new carb.
but no, that would be too easy. can i find a new rochester carb anywhere? no, why? cus they folded.
ok, so i will swap both carbs out for 2 new holley 2brrls, can i find anyone to supply them? even holley? nope, holley are trying for me as is a dealer (engine part dealer, not some trench coat wearer -or is that someone else?)
so, ok fine it will cost a shed load more, but lets price up swapping the inlet manifolds (that cant be ally) to swap to 4 barrels.  lots of 4 barrel holleys around (£450 each  :'(
can i find the right manifolds for my year engine?    :'( :'( :'( :'(
mostly looking at £300- £450 each when i can find inlet manifolds, from states plus shipping, so add that to the carbs, its rather expensive.
im sure the carb is junk, its had a rebuild kit or 20, but i may try sending it off in the mean time of sourcing a new set up.
i dont like that idea tho, the fact it could break up again when im 30 miles off the coast in a storm  :-?

What about converting it to injector as previously suggested?  Sounds like a good time to do it....

Is not not possible to rebuild the carbs?

Where is your boat based? I'm in Portsmouth/solent all next week if you are near...

its possible to put yet another rebuild kit on the carb, or to send it for a proper clean and refurb, but it will leave me with that niggle in my mind it could break up again and its always when you least need it to! atleast i know the other carb is ok and worse case i can limp home on 1 engine.
im moored on the hamble right at the top (bit you can see when you pass on the m27)

atleast if i get that carb working properly, i can get out in the solent ok and start using it.
problem is, ive got a knock in the drive, so as soon as the carbs done, boats being lifted and leg removed to see whats gone wrong (just spend fortune getting them rebuilt again after crap mechanic) , costing me a few hundred upto grand. this ontop of the nearly £3k ive spent in last couple months, then adding erm £1800 aprox if im to swap to 4brrl carbs, before i look at lecky fuel pumps lol. bah boats lol
rebuild kits are readily avalible for these carbs and new floats, but its had so many, can it be past rebuild?

This winter I could help you with a rebuild.if you wish.  We can get the workshop manual and do it slow time once it is lifted out.  I'll be doing some winter sailing down that way this winter too if you have the thermals and the cahoones to join me lol

i have a uber manual for the engines. RK marine keep tryin to sell me diesels, £40k not inc labour to fit pmsl
when you say sail...are you one of those rag n stick men?  ;D
ive never been proper sailing. but when its bloody working and in the water, i use my boat all year round, find in the winter there is some amazing flat water days for me.

One thing im thinking of, as im not happy living here, and im mostly paying for location, is to sell the house, buy a cheaper hosue further south, and change the boat. problem is im always short on deck hands! and going a bit bigger you get a cabin at the forward making a small area for lounging around. my boats survived two other times ive put offers in on boats, which failed on the surveys, i think its prob the best size for me, shes really beamy for her size making it nice and stable.

Yes I am a WAFI ;D

I have a dry suit and thermals purely for the winter sailingseason.  No crowds of people, lots of space on launch ramps and less 'colregs are optional for me' stinkers  ;D

would def like a trip out! leaving the hamble in peak season can be a total arse, with all the 1st season blokes with £200k sports cruisers thinking they can do what they want, my boats getting on a bit now, i love the retroness, but the days of killing £300k sunseekers has past lol (she used to hit 40 knotts) looking forward to more relaxed cruising.
i do keep looking at motor sailors, just a bit scared of all the ropes haha

Another vote for a rebuild kit for the carb. It's only a block of metal with some jets screwed into it so chances are it will be a blocked jet, broken diaphragm or a leaking seal and a rebuild will sort it.

bear in mind that a new carb will need to be jetted for the engine spec. and possibly need some tuning work before it's running properly.

I'd be happy to cast an eye over it if I weren't in Cornwall.
