both my 3.0 auto estate and my 3.2 auto estate give around 22 around town...I struggle to hit 30 with either of them without extreme care.

her 3.0 Manual estate gets about 24 around town, low 30's on a careful run.
Manual makes a massive difference urban, not convinced it makes much difference on a run.

This is true... Hence why I seem to be getting mid teens for my LPG economy all the time :-[ ::)

All I know is that my old 2.2 used to get 320/340 miles out of a tank.

The 2.6 has yet to reach 300 miles on a tank, best so far is about 270.

 :(
Autobox lockup doesn't happen until almost 50mph. You need to go faster than 45 :P

On petrol, in my 3.0l auto, I had to try really hard to get under 300m to a tank.  I guess it depends on your definition of how empty the tank is before filling ;)

I'm aware of that, but surely that applies to both a 2.2 and a 2.6?

I have noticed that the 2.6 changes down a lot quicker than the 2.2, even on slight gradients.

Tends to hold the lower gears longer too.

I don't think the V6 DBW gearbox maps are as recent or as refined as the V6 non-DBW ones. Probably same for the 2.2...

as others mentioned, your MID display won't be accurate on LPG  :y

I tend to look at pence per mile rather than MPG. I used to be able to crack 10p a mile on a good run. 27mpg at 59p a litre aint bad  :D

As a comparison to all you V6 boys  :P I generally get around 29mpg out of my 2.0l 4 pot on runs to and from work (20 miles each way / extra urban).

Which my 3.0 would do on mine if I behaved ;) ;) That wasn't easy though as there are 11 Roundabouts between home and work (20 miles) :o :o

I averaged 32mpg on the Lakes trip. Motoway up there, days out on the Friday and Saturday, scenic route back down through Lancaster and then back on the motorway. Not bad for a manual chipped 2.5 diesel ;)

A manual chipped tractor, esp those with 427 ECU's, I reckon are an excellent combo and compromise for power and economy. Matches the DTi for economy, and trounches it for power and smoothness.

I have driven from Walsall to Telford (and back again) for the last 2 days.
10 Minutes worth of driving on roads and dual carriageways leading up to the motorway. (hardly any traffic)
25 miles on the motorway doing 65mph.
Then reverse route back.

Getting (according to trip computer) 39MPG from my 3.0v6 Manual.
(Do not know how accurate it is)

Going straight from 2nd to 4th Gear has had a positive effect on fuel economy.

My 2.6 auto saloon only gives 16 mpg in town driving. Is this low?

Yes but easy done. Make sure multi rams are working, and use the auto box tendency to roll without engine braking to roll up to junctions off the power for as long as possible. For more progressive drivers this can be exceptionally dull, but the challenge is to to judge throttle off so no braking is necessary, say, at the next roundabout for example, provided nothing is on the roundabout of course. High corner speed and minimum pedal work is key IMO. Its a very different way of driving, but can be fun, for a while.  :-/

It's probably been covered before but how do you check that the multi rams are working?
