Cars are changing too much
« on: 19 August 2011, 19:37:09 »

Been having a little drive of my dads Corsa SE the past couple of days, the 1.3 CDTi Start/Stop model it is, very good little engine, and the car itself is pure class really is, has everything anyone could need, heated seats, half leather trim, heated steering wheel, MP3 CD Player, AUX input, auto lights, wipers, very comfortable for little car too! Average MPG is 55 MPG, and as it's not even run in yet, so that'll be class when it's all loosened up nicely.

One thing I don't like is this Start/Stop malarky, it's so odd it's unreal, out of gear into neutal it conks out, dip the clutch and it starts back up, now as I've been driving since 1986, this is too odd for my liking and I always turn it off (which is good that you can), but I think things are changing too much just for emissions anyone else agree on that  :-?

Yes, does stop /start (don't know much about it me) not put extra strain on the battery/starter etc. Could it not shorten the life of the cats potentially? Can you disable it if the battery is low on charge so you don't get stranded? Does it work for automatics?

If the battery is low it won't conk out, when it's charged enough it'll start stopping if that makes sense  ;D BMW have only just started putting it on the 520d automatic, so that's not widely available yet.

see the goverment want you to save money eco friendly cars, but you'll spend more dam break down repairs, people should just buy pre 2001 cars and all pay the same tax,i think the new road tax system just takes the piss out of drivers

I think it all boils down to the fact that as a race we're using too much too soon and it can't be replaced. I'm makng the most of my v6 beasts before we're all walking again.

I agree it does take some getting used to. I tend to switch it off like you, although it does actually work. I like to be 'ready to go' when the lights change and as you said, it goes against our driving style.  ::) ::) :y  ( Incidentally, what does come after Amber??? )   ::) ::) ;D ;D

Apparently so, not sure how, unless it is when you put it in neutral, as with a manual.... :-/ :-/

One of the cars I was enquiring about has this on it's auto, Pug 3008, however reading the Vx leaflets I picked up today seems to suggest that you can turn it off, apparently you get used to it, but that was from a young lad who has only been driving a few years...... ::) ::)

I wonder if the way to turn it off is simple and straightforward so that the man in the street can do it without too much hassle. Why is all this crap forced upon us by people who think they know what's best for us and try to tell us what to do?

It really is simple to turn off. You just press a button on the dash (or by gearstick) and a light comes on to say it is de-activated.  :y :y

It defaults to on again when you re-start the car.
