A student method of getting oil from plug wells...
« on: 09 September 2011, 18:22:06 »

So doing mother T's cam cover gasket, the passenger side was totally fubared, I got bit bored of trying to soak up the oil with paper towels, used loads only did a fraction of first plug, had 2 more to go.

So ex-student bodge time, I found an old de-icer sprayer, junked the bottle, got a plastic cup out & put the sucking nozzle into the plug well.

Because the oil is thicker than water, it does not 'spray' it out, comes out as a dribble, but its soooooo much faster, talking seconds to empty a full plug well:

I tried that trick on a friends Jag (XKR - nice car, when it's not running on 4 cylinders  ;D ) - worked for about three pumps and then gave up (as the actress said to the bishop).

Clearly you need to use a good quality sprayer ;)

But yes, it beat paper towels! :y

Father T likes those, might be a future replacement :)

The sprayer was your average one, but it worked ok, I found slow 'pumps' (oooo errr!) were better.

@guffer - Syringe would be better, but I like bodges  ;D

Good idea. Will remember that for the future  :)

My method used an old compressor from a fridge, some piping, and an old wine bottle.

Compressor pump inlet --> Wine bottle (used as a catch tank for all the oil etc) --> plug wells  :y

Worked well until some idiot binned it thinking it was rubbish!  >:( >:( >:( >:(
