Tunnie's bodge reminds me of a bus that I was on in the Philippines once.   

I was sat up front next to the driver and noticed that every now and again he'd open a little brass tap on a length of hosepipe that came in through the window and disappeared  into the engine bulge between us. 

When we had a pee stop and I came out of the 'services', the driver was on the roof filling a big steel tank with water from a hose. When I looked underneath there was water pissing out from the engine bay. 

So when the engine temperature got a bit too hot, he was topping up the radiator from the tank up top!

Took the V8 Benz for a nice long drive 



While parked up, Watched a little Tennis on the inbuilt TV with the massage seats on 

Missed this, when did you get that? Always liked the CLS. 

Likewise always liked the CLS. Had it about a month now, Had been looking at the classifieds for awhile for a good one to turn up 

Fuel wise for a 5.5 V8 it’s about the same if not a tad better than the 3.2 Omega

Yeah the early M273 did have timing issues before a certain serial number. This one is the latter so should be all good.

It’s a late 2008, 67k, 1 owner from new, full MB service history. High specification.

Yeah the early M273 did have timing issues before a certain serial number. This one is the latter so should be all good.

Nice low miles, crappy on the tax though being 2008? 

Always thought I could run a V8, being used to 24mpg on the 3.2. Be good to see how you get on as they are reasonable money now.

It's funny, in the scheme of things when running a big capacity petrol car, £550 Vs £280  in ved is pretty small beer. But it just *feels* like a middle finger from the government doesn't it!

Especially when for example a new BMW 3.0 Turbocharged 6 pot with 340 ponies is just £130 a year in tax.

True, but another way of looking at it is that for a lot of cars; they wouldn't be the price that they are if they were not £500+ to tax.

Yeah true, My 3.2 Omega on a 51 plate is £325 (single payment) or £341 when paying monthly.

The CLS is £570 (single payment) or £598 when paying monthly.

Was very tempted by a 2014 335d xDrive but they are to much currently. Bags of power, excellent handling, surprisingly comfortable and enough space, good mpg, cheap tax etc... It’s just the initial cost at the moment that’s keeping me away. Equally the 340i would be a good choice.... The CLS has done its depreciation it’s only going to go down relatively slowly now. Probably keep it a year or two.

The timing chain idler/V6 balance shaft pulley and the V6 diesel issues makes any 06-08 equipped car a ticking bomb because even caught in time it's still a ££££ bill  although at least they managed to do something about it.

Been thinking about the VED aspect, and actually, as you suggest, it isn't that big a deal. I suspect that Tunnie spends more on coffee/snacks working from home than £25 a month, which is the reality of the difference between an Omega and something similar but newer

Just like mine except my car came with the basic 306 BHP  5 litre V8.
