Found it. :y...........it hasnt just broken, its melted through at the point where it bolts onto the gearbox.Looks like someone has been at it with an oxy-acetlene torch. :o
That explains the "bad earth" problem, but why has it melted ? Its not a little 2 mm wire. ???

Well I guess it's 1 of 2 reasons...

1.  The braids had started to break, and the current had less of a path, which caused it to overheat and melt.  Possibly combined with some arcing.

2.  The alternator is putting out to much current, and is burning things out.  The alternator I replaced on it 2 years ago was putting out over 17 amps.  However, after I replaced it I checked all the wiring, and everything was ok.

Have you checked the output at the alternator yet?

Thanks Henry.Will do. :y

I suspect the lack of proper engine earth is the cause of you seeing 17v of charge ;)

Don't know Henry.  I checked the earth straps before I replaced the alternator, and they were fine back then (this was 2 years ago).  Fitted new alternator which provided charging voltage of 14.4v.  I managed to return the original alternator under warranty to the supplier, and they confirmed it was faulty.  :-\

Just realised in my post #3526 above, I was rabbiting on about the alternator producing 17 amps. Of course, I meant volts... Been one of those days...  :-[

Replaced the interior from my CDX to my GLS today, including carpet and sound proofing due to a blocked scuttle drain, I really don't want to do that again ever :(

Today I fitted a new aeriel lead (kickpanel to headunit) thanks to Albitz and now have a radio again, though only took me 15 minutes to fit as I routed it differently this time.  :y

Lee here, I personally have done nothing  :P

but Phil has been playing about under the bonnet, and found out that the cause of 1 of our problems is the crank sensor... now off to find out which type we have, as someone told us there are 2 different ones... then find where we can get one
