Yet the motoring media have constantly told us since the mid 70,s to the present day, that the Golf is the best smallish car money can buy.
All those brown envelopes stuffed full of euros must cloud their judgement.  :D

Oh any car TB does not like is an industry winner generally, like the Focus  ;D

Golf GTi is always a flop isn't it?  ;)

SWMBO had a 1999 golf for 6 or 7 years.

It wasn't love at first sight when she first got it but we assumed that we would grow to like it over time. The longer she owned it the more apparent it became that money spent on marketing (and maybe brown envelopes?) had worked.

On the plus side - it was easy to sell when she finally got rid of it :y

Ive driven several Golf GTi,s over the years and never been impressed by any of them tbh. Ive never got what all the hype was about.
Generally though, powerful / sporty wwd cars have always seemed a bit pointless to me.

I have a list of minor jobs to do to both cars and have a few days of work. Problem is I have a heavy dose of cba at the moment.
This seems to happen more and more frequently these days. I think they call it getting old.  :(
The thought of sitting asleep in a chair all day long, by the sunny window, with a bit of potato stuck to my chin, isn't as unattractive as it once was.  ;D

The Golf GTi is, in my view, a sporty car for drivers who don't like sporty cars but want the badge.  ::)

The Mk1 was, in my opinion, a revolution, light, agile and powerful..........but it went downhill fast from there (the Mk2 being lardy and lacking)

Traced the slightly wayward steering to a knackered steering idler, which was duly replaced this morning from my spares store and just return from having the alignment checked and adjusted slightly.

Normal service seems to be restored now although the 140mile drive tomorrow should confirm

True, the Mk 1 was a hoot, then it went South. :y

(Yesterday) Cleaned out the gutters and drainpipes and Mrs. KW's MX5 due to damp in the boot. Seems they didn't fix this issue, that was the same on the MK2. They just made it much more awkward to fix. ::)

Have you driven one? I can tell you, such a disappointment.

As others have said, the original was something different at the time. Good enough to give the otherwise bland basic Golf the lift it needed. One of my bro's had one (and a Mk2) in the day. The Mk2 and later, were just also-rans.  Incidentally, a 1.4 Rover 200/25 was quicker to 60mph than a Mk3 Gold GTi ;). Bro soon got shot of the Mk2 Golf and replaced with the much quicker (but less predictable) 205 GTi.

I believe I've mentioned here before of a bit of a race between my 2 bros (1.3 Cavalier, Mk2 Golf GTi) and sis (Fiat 850 Sport Coupe), and the Golf disgraced itself, despite the fact its driver was by far the best (trained high performance driver).

So, if you think the Golf GTi is in any way a great car, you need to look beyond the VW brand ;)

Thought I should put some electricity in Kitty, but it started raining before it was full.  Might put some more in if it stays dry later.
